You can also ask guests to bring a dish that can go in the freezer or stored in tupperware (a "freezer" party instead of a traditional shower). During the final days of pregnancy and the first week after the birth, mom will definitely appreciate this. Make sure that mom knows about the shower ahead of time so she can determine if she has enough room for everything, and also pick a day for the shower which is close to her due date. Do keep in mind that in the case of caboose babies (a "caboose" baby is born several years after the next-oldest sibling), a full shower can be held with no impropriety. In many cases mom and dad will no longer have even the big-ticket items anymore, or they might be considered unsafe under today's standards. Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.
