what Parents Of Second Babies Really Need

By: Gen Wright

A baby shower is one of the nicest ways for new parents to acquire the items that they need to have a smooth start to parenthood. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. It has often been considered excessive to have a shower for a second child, as mom and dad were likely to already have everything they needed. It is now considered proper to have a second-baby shower, as long as certain modifications are made.

You could hold a mini-shower where gifts are limited to those basic necessities that are always needed, such as diapers, wet wipes, bottles, burping cloths, undershirts, and bath items. You might ask the parents to list whatever items they never got or need to replace from the first time around. Another idea is to have a shower dedicated to the mom, where guests bring gifts that will help her relax during the last weeks of her pregnancy and after the birth. You can choose items that will be a treat, like a thick, sweet-smelling body lotion, or something more practical, like an extra-large handbag.

It's also a fun idea to have a shower where all the gifts are for mom - but are not related to being a mom, like a flirty nightdress or sexy nail polish (for when she can see her toes again!). Obviously mom and dad will need some time for themselves, so a nice idea might be to get a gift certificate for an elegant dinner - with babysitting included, of course. Another useful idea is to sit down with the dad and the mom's loved ones, and organize a dry-erase calendar with concrete offers of help where it is likely to be needed.

Some tasks that you could arrange for include getting the house organized and laundry done so mom and baby can come home to a clean house, helping transport the older child to his/her activities, or going along to help out on a big grocery or warehouse club run. The finished calendar, with names and phone numbers in case of adjustments, can be presented to mom at the shower. In some cases, both mom and baby are set, and don't need anything new. Or, consider having a simple party, featuring good food, music, and the mom's loved ones.

You may want to ask the guests to bring baby items for donation to a women's charitable organization. You can also ask guests to bring a dish that can go in the freezer or stored in tupperware (a "freezer" party instead of a traditional shower). During the final days of pregnancy and the first week after the birth, mom will definitely appreciate this. Make sure that mom knows about the shower ahead of time so she can determine if she has enough room for everything, and also pick a day for the shower which is close to her due date.

Do keep in mind that in the case of caboose babies (a "caboose" baby is born several years after the next-oldest sibling), a full shower can be held with no impropriety. In many cases mom and dad will no longer have even the big-ticket items anymore, or they might be considered unsafe under today's standards.

Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.

It's a time-honored way for the parents' friends and family to show that they can count on their support. In the past, having a second-baby shower has been frowned upon, since the parents are likely to already have the big items like high chairs and changing tables.
