By: .JohnSmith.

The history of poker is debatable though it has an interesting story about how it began. In the history of poker it is believed that poker originated from Nas an ancient Persian card game. It was one of the earliest games to introduce betting, hand-ranking and bluffing.

It is assumed in poker history that the name poker has probably been derived from these names, Poque / Pochen which means pocket in French and bluff in German or maybe even Poca in Irish which also means pocket. Yet it is not proved in history of poker whether the origin of poker is from these games but possibly influenced by the earlier games. According to history, Poker originated in Europe and when the Europeans traveled to America for business they took the game along. The history of poker has it that when traders from France traveled to colonies like New Orleans in the 1700’s they taught the local people the game which the people liked and learnt fast. It spread fast and became very popular. Poker grew even more popular during the civil war especially amongst the soldiers as the game required a lot of skill. The most popular game of poker was and still is the No-limit Hold’em game.

According to Poker history it was played with a deck of 20 cards and 4 players betting on the highest hand.

Poker became all the more popular in the 1970’s due to many developments in the game. Many started making a living out of poker which resulted in cheating. In poker then, the players were dealt only 5 cards and had only1round of betting with no draw cards. Draw cards were introduced in 1850’s with 2 betting rounds instead of 1. With the internet popularity in the 1990’s online poker and casinos became very popular. With this the gambling rooms got bigger too.

The mid 90’s saw the beginning of a new phenomenon ‘Online Poker’. In 1994 a major online casino software supplier called Microgaming was the first to develop an operational online casino. But the first online poker room was established in 1998. Planet poker was the only online poker firm but it enjoyed its sole status only for a short while. Offline poker is now part of history.

People were more inspired to play online poker when Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP (World Series of Poker) beginning with $30 and taking home $2,500,000.

California, which has the largest poker casinos in the world, introduced community card poker. This became very popular because it was very exciting to play. At the beginning of the 21st century online poker turned into a popular spectator sport. And it gave rise to major poker tournament fields since 2003.
