What follows is my initial attempt to explain the social media ecosystem with the business or individual at the center of a sphere. Outside the "clear" sphere is the net at large (the "cloud" if you'll). Among the sphere are the myriad of tools and interfaces (not depicted) used to interact with the internet and various social media channels. At the edge of the sphere are several smaller "spheres" every representing some class of social media channels (social networking, blogging, multi-media...). At the high of the transparent sphere are the tools which disseminate the content we produce out to the internet (ex: ping.fm) while at the underside are the tools which aggregate data coming to us from the web/social media channels (aggregators like an RSS reader). Interaction is additionally direct to social media channels (going to twitter.com) also indirect via tools (FriendFeed, Tweetdeck, ...). Perhaps the foremost confusing half is the "curved" lines that come out of the middle (via the top "dissemination") and into the various social media channels representing content we tend to produce which also are exposed to the web. Lines beginning from those channels coming back back in through the underside represent aggregation or content that involves us.
