We are starting to understand how the interaction of all of our body systems influences our health with the emergence of new areas of science. We used to view our separate body systems as just that - separate. But we now understand how our lifestyles can affect our health and how well we ward off illness particularly as we get older. Something is not right with the way many of us live our lives in our modern world as 'chronic lifestyle disease' has reached epidemic proportions and our collective health has been on the decline since World War II. Killers like heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of other are taking or wrecking the lives of millions of people worldwide and the predictions are that it is going to get worse....much worse. A healthy strong immune system is essential for wellness. Think of it like a fortress impenetrable against invading forces however, it needs to be continually fortified or it will slowly weaken and become susceptible to foreign invaders. Although our immune system is affected by both genetic and environmental factors it is also affected by lifestyle factors and how well we practice our own self care in the way of proper exercise and healthy eating. We know that as we get older the immune system becomes less effective in protecting us from disease - that is if we let it. But the good news is that most of the decline of the immune system previously attributed to simply getting older is no more than the fact that as people get older they become less active and less likely to eat properly. These factors have a lifelong snowball effect on the health of the immune system. It is a shame that our modern technology driven lifestyle have pushed vigorous physical activity from our lives as we need it to remain healthy and well. It is the stimulus the body needs - the movement that causes the release of 'growth and repair' hormones that renew, repair, replace and rebuild old worn out cells and tissues. Keeping our muscular system strong with proper exercise is crucial as there is a very important link between the health of our muscles and the health of our immune system. This is something not everybody realizes. We are aware that our immune system is responsible for fighting off colds and infections, but are you aware it also finds and destroys cancer cells on a regular basis? Our muscles are the depots for the amino acid glutamine which is the building blocks of new cells and tissues and is the fuel the immune system needs to produce new antibodies and white blood cells to fight infection. If your muscles are strong and toned there is plenty of glutamine in reserve to call upon to fight illness or for greater protection from disease. Let those muscles get weak and flabby and the immune system will weaken and not do its job properly which is not a good situation for an aging adult. So, if you need more reasons to stick to your strength training program here is an extra one. Get and keep your body strong so that you can have the best protection available against a nasty disease that can rob you of your life. Your very own amour and defense system that is depending on the self care you give it in the way of proper exercise and healthy eating so it can remain healthy and do its job.
