You Have To Work At Keeping Your Strength - It Doesn't Happen On Its Own

By: Gen Wright

We are hearing more and more about our metabolism these days. Our metabolic rate is the speed at which our body turns the food we eat into energy and if it slows and becomes sluggish we are very likely to become overweight. So, many people are talking about how we can speed up this very special fat burning engine.

We sometimes hear that certain foods or drink can speed it up but the truth is there is really only one thing that can do it and it is most certainly not Green Tea or some berry or plant from the Amazonian jungle. That one thing is your lean muscle mass and the moving of it is vital not only for your metabolism but for staying strong, lean and healthy.

When you tone up your muscle tissue with strength training exercise it gives you curves in all the right places no matter if you are a man or a woman. Having fat hanging from your body does nothing good for your appearance, but lean firm muscle tissue turns bad curves into good curves.

Only strength training exercise can do this for you not 'cardio' type activity. Low intensity recreational things like walking, jogging or cycling will not boost your metabolism for the long term so all the time spent doing them could be better spent with resistance training where you will give the most 'bang for your buck'.

Even if you are an older person having strength is way more important than having 'cardio' type fitness. People don't fall because they lack heart/lung fitness and they do not get put into wheelchairs when disabled because they cannot run or cycle. They end up in this state because for decades they have been losing precious muscle tissue and therefore no longer have enough strength for living and life.

When strength is lost from not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity all of the body's systems go into a downward health spiral including the immune system which increases the risk of disease. Gaining strength will disease proof the human body.

A sad fact of life is the most of obstacles to living a full life as people get older come from not having enough all over body strength. The old 'use it or lose it' scenario. Having plenty of strength makes everyday tasks and activities so much easier. Carrying kids, groceries or laundry, working around the house, keeping up with the grandchildren - all become easier when you are strong. That strength translates into better function.

But it does not happen on its own. It takes a bit of time and effort and maybe a little money but you will never regret investing any of these things into your very own health and fitness. Get yourself along to your local gym or fitness center and get yourself started on a proper program of strength training.

Keep in mind that strength is the most important fitness attribute you can build and maintain. Your quality of life really does depend on it and it is never too late to start.
