For millions of women, Yaz and blood clots are considered an acceptable risk. Unfortunately, many of these women do not fully appreciate their exposure to abnormal clotting. Nor do they realize their vulnerability to the dangerous side effects of Yaz birth control. Not only do the blood clots pose a risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but they can also cause pulmonary embolism, stroke, and heart attack. Yaz oral contraceptives contain ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and drospirenone, a relatively new synthetic progestin. In August 2009, the British Medical Journal published a study showing a marked increase in the risk of clotting attributed to an estrogen-drospirenone combination. While the warning label mentions the risks of developing Yaz blood clots, many of the dangers are largely ignored. Meanwhile, a growing number of women have reported suffering the clot-induced side effects described below. Understanding Deep Vein Thrombosis Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the presence of blood clots within one of your deep veins. The condition usually develops in the thighs and calves, but clots can also form in your arms and pelvis. In half of diagnosed cases, symptoms are absent; the condition is discovered while performing tests for other diseases or disorders. When symptoms manifest, they are usually limited to swelling, pain, and a sensation of warmth in the site of the clot. The danger of DVT is that the clots can break away from the venous wall and travel with your bloodstream. One of the reasons this happens is due to the location of your deep veins. They lie nestled among groups of muscles that contract whenever you move. Your muscles' contractions squeeze the veins, propelling blood toward your heart. They can also dislodge Yaz blood clots and send them in the same direction. Risks Posed By Yaz Blood Clots And DVT Your deep veins connect to your vena cava, a large vein that delivers oxygen-poor blood to your heart's right atrium. Blood clots that have broken free of your deep veins can travel through your vena cava toward your heart. Because your heart is the hub that circulates oxygen-rich blood to your major organs, traveling clots (i.e. emboli) that reach it pose significant risks. Consider that the official Yaz website mentions stroke and heart attack as potential side effects of using this birth control pill. One of the catalysts of these events is blood clots. If an embolus travels through your heart and exits the left ventricle, it will emerge in the aorta. Your aorta sends blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your brain through your carotid arteries. A blood clot that lodges within a carotid artery can interrupt the supply of these things and trigger a Yaz stroke. Some of the oxygen-rich blood that flows through your aorta travels into your coronary arteries. These arteries supply blood to your heart. An embolus that blocks a coronary artery will cause a heart attack. The official Yaz website fails to mention (at the time of writing) another dangerous side effect of traveling blood clots: pulmonary embolism. Blood moves from your heart's right ventricle to your lungs through your pulmonary arteries. An embolus that forms a blockage within one of these arteries can cause Yaz PE and damage your lungs. Given that a blood clot need only advance through the right side of your heart to trigger PE, there may be greater risk involved than stroke or heart attack. Yaz blood clot problems extend further than DVT, and can include stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism. All three are potentially life-threatening depending on the event's severity and the timeliness with which treatment is administered. If you have suffered abnormal clotting, DVT, or any of the Yaz side effects described above, you are not alone. Otherwise healthy women have experienced serious problems after taking this birth control pill.
