Many of us who are regular worship leaders can recognize this feeling: it's Sunday morning, it's early and you do not feel ok, however you have a responsibility to the Lord, the Pastor and the congregation to be leading worship, and doing it well. Even effective worship leaders face days like this, and, because I had one of these on Sunday previous, I would like to hearten those of you who cope with the week in, week out worship leading that we desperately want to make sure does not become a chore! There are loads of reasons why, when we confront the prospect of worship leading, we can feel down. It can be as simple as coming off a late evening, feeling exhausted or unwell or simply plain worn out, right through to having major events upsetting our sense of joyfulness, things like marital difficulties, the passing away of a close friend or a fight with somebody in your band just before you are going on. In my situation it was certainly a late night, a trip to a near city which left me feeling worn-out, lethargic and a bit down or unhappy when it came to worship leading. Uninspired was probably a good word, and I gazed across at the others in my worship team, recognized that I was going to have to carry a number of of these guys because their ability was not great, but then I saw something else. They too were tired and lethargic. Possibly it was infectious! I prayed and asked the Lord to help, and I recognized that, when we are weak, He is strong (2 Cor 12:10). I recognized again that this complete vocation of worship leading is not about me, and how I feel, it's about Him! I took a good, extended look at myself, and realized that in fact I am just a servant, not a singer, not a guitarist and absolutely not a star! I recognized that, regardless of how I felt inside, that I considered it necessary to modify my mind-set and continue to serve, no matter what the sacrifice. Then the Lord started to move with magnificent power, initially in my own heart, and after that in the hearts of the singers and musicians. I shared my fight with them for a short time, and we paused to pray as a team and give the service to the Lord. Whether we use our hands, feet or voices, all of us above all use out hearts, and this is the appropriate attitude to worship leading as a servant. And so the worship leading began, and almost from the very first note you could discern the presence of the Lord, and His joy at our change of heart, and at our judgment to do our best no matter what we felt at that moment. In our weakness, He showed Himself strong, and we were rewarded with a fantastic and highly intimate time of worship leading. So, fellow worship leaders, I write this highly truthful, open and realistic article to inspire you, and to tell you that, when you are feeling depressed, fatigued and uninspired, you are not alone. All worship leaders sense this at some stage, all worship leaders labor to keep the fire of inspiration flourishing, and all worship leaders require reminding that worship leading is not about us, and our talents and our passion, it is, and always ever will be, first and foremost about HIM!
