Worship Leading- The Delight, The Ache And The Responsibility!

By: Darin Browne

As soon as you are called to be a worship leader, there is a vast amount of joy, but this can be counterbalanced by a certain amount of hurt in getting your worship leading to the point that you need it to be.

Worship leading is, in fact, about those two terms; worship and leading! Sure, it helps if you play an instrument or sing well, but this is not essential when it comes to worship leading. The two key requirements are that you have a spirit to worship (and many people can sing or play well, but do not really distinguish the primary thing about worship!), and that you are able to be a true leader to your band and your listeners.

So, what does leading in fact mean in the context of worship? We recognize that the Biblical definition of leading involves serving (Mark 10:45), and I imagine that this is an exceptional frame of reference when you believe being the leader of a worship team.

So, as the worship leader, you ought to be responsible for the general direction and execution of the worship in your church on any particular Sunday. Most often you must settle on the songs, the sequence of the songs, the way these songs are coupled together and the form of music used, as skillfully as specialized areas of worship such as open worship or blending into communion, etc. This must be your domain, and that means that you need to take complete responsibility for every decision you make, whether it works out capably or poorly.

As leaders, we all require to realize that in the efficient worship times, where you really sense the Lord's spirit and power, we had a colossal part in it. But when things go amiss, when the worship is demanding , when the band or singers miss the mark, or the congregation is uninterested or confused, we too have to recognize that, as Franklin D Roosevelt said, “the buck stops here!”

So, worship leading involves you not simply setting the direction and pace of worship, it also sees you bearing the responsibility for whatsoever goes right or wrong during worship. You cannot have one devoid of the other.

Leading worship also needs leading your band and singers, dealing with the difficulties they can offer, which can sometimes draw more pain than tears. YOU have to decide who is on this week. YOU have to settle on what part each will play, and YOU have to inform them when they are out of line, but do this continuously in love!

Yet all through all of the worship leading trials and troubles, in the end you must continually consider that you are in this situation of worship leader to serve; to serve the Lord, to serve the Pastor and to serve both the worshippers and your partner musicians and singers. A great leader leads by serving others. A great leader leads by inspiration, not by a environment of fear and threats, yet as I travel the world I see again and again worship leaders who consider that they are dictators, ruling in a atmosphere of fear.

Worship leading is first and foremost about worship, and worship is about serving. Worship leaders, I beg you, please do not laud it over your troops with an iron fist. Be dedicated, but also be full of love, full of kindness and full of a serving heart. Then you shall truly ascend to be the worship leaders you need to be.
