Why the Strange Spin With John McCain?

By: Pi Ba

Oh what a difference a month can make in the world of politics.

It seems like it was only few weeks ago that we were in the middle of a hotly contested general election contest where Sen. John McCain was the Republican presidential hopeful and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was his choice of VP and both were attempting claim to the title of maverick in their quest to retake 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for the Republicans.

Now look what has changed? that was just a few weeks ago. Silly me! I guess I got confused because just this past Sunday while appearing on ABC’s This Week Sen. John McCain seemed to be doubtful of his support for the future political ambitions of his former running mate Gov. Palin.

When asked by George Stephanopoulus if Gov. Sarah Palin could count on his endorsement if she were to opt to run for president in 2012, Senator McCain hedged, big time.

"I can't say something like that,” John McCain told Stephanopoulus in response to the question. “We've got some great other young governors. I think you're going to see the governors assume a greater leadership role in our Republican Party," he continued before going on to mention the names of other Republican governors like Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Jon Huntsman of Utah.

The thing that surprises me most in this surprising set up is that even though McCain’s insistence in this ABC interview that he has only "the greatest appreciation for Governor Palin and her family’ and his praise for the way Gov. Palin “invigorated our campaign,” he simultaneous argues that because his ‘corpse is still warm’ after his defeat on the election trail it would be hard for him to support anyone.

Well I would actually debate the converse. It is precisely because his corpse is warm that John McCain should naturally be supportive of the person who just six weeks ago he asked the country to believe was ready to be his second in command and thereby a heartbeat away from the presidency as they say.

I mean I get that we’re in a new election cycle and no astute politician wants to jump the gun on anything, but Senator McCain could have given us a bit more than the old “Have no doubt of my admiration and respect for her and my view of her viability” line, don’t you think? I mean it seems he could have sold that one better if he had really desired to. Especially since the way he launched the Alaska governor onto the national stage with such lavish aplomb back in September.
