One of the most important decisions you can make when building or remodeling a home is to choose the right kind of door to provide the best protection and safety possible. Wooden doors are a popular option. Wooden doors break down into roughly two areas 1) quality matured aged wood and 2) kiln dried resin impregnated. Option 1 is obviously the better product but is very expensive. Option 2 is a cheaper option but is of lesser quality, will need replacing much sooner and generally poses a security risk. An alternative to wooden doors are composite doors. Composite doors come in many guises, some better than others. At the bottom end of the composite door market are doors made with a mix of softwood & GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) in a softwood outer frame. Experience shows that this type of door does not stand up to even mild attack (a gentle kick would be all that is required for the locked door to fly open) In the middle of the composite door market, materials used would be GRP skins covering a polyurethane foam slab (normally 44m thickness) with a uPVC external frame. These types of composite doors usually have a multi point locking strip and are generally considered more secure than wooden blend composites. At the top of the composite door market sits Rockdoor. Rockdoor manufacture and supply a fully engineered 6mm uPVC skinned ultra secure composite door. If you are concerned about the level of protection that your door offers to your home, then purchasing a rock door is a good idea. Even police officers cannot break through a rock door with their professional equipment. Whatever the safety needs of your home, composite doors are a great option. Whether you go with the typical composite door, or opt for the extra protection that a rock door offers you will not be disappointed. UPVC doors Another popular type of doors are UPVC panel doors. These doors are some of the cheapest to build and place in a home. uPVC panle doors are still the homeowners favourite as they are relatively cheap to have installed and offer, dependant on the specification, a reasonable level of security and resistance to attack. They are weather resistant, and are easy to produce. However, Lower specification uPVC doors tend to discolour over time, do not have a great level of security and can be considered unattractive due to the black gasket showing on the outside of the door. Composite Doors A better alternative to a UPVC door is a composite door. Composite doors are a mixture of different materials that are combined to create a stronger, more versatile door. A composite door can be made in many different colours and shapes, With their traditional look and feel they are fast becoming the homeowners preferred choice. Composite doors also tend to be stronger than other kinds of cheaper doors due to their manufacturing process and their individual specifications. There are many different designs and combinations of design, glass and colour making them attractive to the eye and adding kerb appeal to the property in which they sit. Composite doors are similar to uPVC doors as they require little maintenance. It is possible to paint a composite door, however it is recommended that they aren’t as it would invalidate any warranty.
