Why Wasn't Jesus Funny?

By: GlennRand1516

One of the principal ironies associated with Jesus' lifetime, in my own thoughts and opinions, has been that he was never documented telling a joke. I believe it is very hard to think that Jesus never told a joke around a campfire during the night about some community Pharisee whom got tongue-tied while in a crucial speech and, for me, to think any different is laughable. Just as I might find it difficult to believe that jokes will not be being told around the water-cooler at the office on Monday mornings concerning some superior that messed up in the board meeting. So why wasn't Jesus at any time documented telling a joke?

Firstly -- a wide range of Christians believe in a stoic existence - that to be a real Christian you must deny your self enjoyment. I feel that Christian believers believe this for one particular important reason -- that saving souls is definitely serious business, and in fact they're right -- saving lives for your eternity is critical business, however this way of life confuses Christians into thinking that Jesus did not use a sense of humor.

There is however more to the reason Jesus was never shown to be a wit. Any joke or anecdote, he might have applied, might have been lost in translation. The Bible has been translated many times over many years losing some of the witty wordings. For example, the majority of people do not understand that the "Eye of the Needle" (Matthew 19:24) was in fact a low archway that lead into a town, which was too low for camels to enter. Thus when Jesus said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God;" he appeared to be setting up a very humorous contrast, and it would have been apparent to everybody that listened to it. However nowadays, the meaning of "The Eye of the Needle" has been misplaced.

Another problem is Jesus' phrases tend to be so well-known, (I bet you could most likely quote a lot of his sayings by heart.) which points to a leading problem when utilizing humor. Laughter comes to someone as a result of surprise, and it will be tough to surprise a person about, for instance, the "Speck and Log in your Eye" (Mathew 7:12) parable when you've listened to it numerous occasions before. I can guess you smiled the first time you heard Jesus' words, "Why, then, do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the beam in your own eye?" Back in Jesus' days, as well, this statement would have brought smiles to individual's faces too. Surprise can be quite significant when you find yourself creating humor, and his words and phrases have been repeated many times that they do not come to us in a surprising manner - dropping any possibility of laughter.

Ultimately, the Christian's mind-set as well as thinking that Jesus would have been a serious man - an unfunny man - stops some other Christians into thinking that he might have been quite humorous. These reasons tend to be why a large number of Christians mistakenly consider that Jesus wasn't a funny man.

If 'Jesus wept' (John 11:35) then he would have been able of showing the reverse emotion: laughter. And if he was able to laugh, he was able to create laughter as well. You are going to come to see just how humorous he was, as well as approaches he utilized to make laughter.
