Why Renting A Business Phone System Is Far Better Than Owning One

By: Roberto Garabell

The greatest benefit of VoIP is its flexibility. Depending on the type of business you run and the amount of time, money and manpower your company has, you can find different ways to implement your VoIP infrastructure. It can even depend on your philosophy. Are you the kind of manager who likes to delegate, or manage everything yourself? When switching to VoIP services, you face a fundamental choice - do you want to own and operate your own VoIP servers and gateways or is it better to outsource the job to professionals for a monthly fee? There's no simple answer and it depends entirely on the circumstances.

Some people compare it to buying or renting a house. Sure renting a house can be cheaper in the short term, but at the end of it you don't really own anything. Nor is the house entirely under your control. You can't make all the changes you might want for example. Such individuals extend the analogy to recommend buying your own VoIP service instead of purchasing a monthly service. While there is a grain of truth in such a comparison, it's actually a false equivalence. And here's why.

Buying a house is part of the core of a person's life. It plays a huge role in their existence and is an asset to be treasured. Whereas communication, though vital to a business, is a support service. Most small and medium sized businesses do best when they're entirely focused on their primary business. Expending manpower and time on anything else just distracts them from their main objective.

Also, technology keeps changing. New systems appear and better security architectures are designed and innovative protocols are implemented. Owning your own VoIP PBX system means you or your technical teams have to keep up with these improvements and make changes, purchase new equipment or software perhaps and generally keep everything tuned up. It's a huge burden to maintain if you don't have the expertise. In addition, such support staff utilizes space, mindshare and generally puts a business in danger of losing its focus.

A hosted VoIP PBX system is run by professionals who take it upon themselves to maintain and update your systems when necessary. They troubleshoot problems and keep the dirty inner workings hidden from their clients who can focus on their business in peace knowing that professionals have their backs.

So while an in house VoIP system can certainly bring some benefits to the table, the vast majority of businesses will find it too much of a hassle. The analogy with buying and renting a house is flawed and in this case, the reverse is true - most businesses will benefit from a hosted VoIP service instead.
