Why Paint Photographs

By: Siegelsyn Petersen

A plane ride and an art piece. One of the primary art movements in the 70s, photorealism can be experienced in the Kansas University Art Museum. Setting apart pigment from celluloid is something that you need to master.

It is a working medium that is needed by those who paint in this particular manner. Here is where a photograph is copied by the artist, using paints and a blank canvass. Accompanied by his friend who is a leading aviation and aerospace attorney, a team of two setup what was to become a showcase of the works done by 22 artists. There were diverse pieces in the collection.

The theme of one artist is a horse. Model planes and all, two brothers are looking directly at the camera while their sister is riding a horse. It was the idea of another artist to put a toy car by a toy helicopter and in line with the old toys theme, there was also a floating plane in a bathtub. It was the decision of one artist to use an aquarium floor and a small plane.

It seems as if you are actually looking at the original photograph, the artists really outdid themselves when it comes to their various painting techniques. When Renaissance artists needed to enlarge their sketches for murals, they made use of grids and this is what one of the artists did.

For one artist, it was an air borne fighter jet that he decided to paint. In this case, what you will notice is how well the artists make use of clear, precise lines and color in their works. Using his antique photographs, an air ship was painted with tints by one of the artists during the show.

In terms of painting a photograph, why would an artist go through all of the trouble of doing so' By using a picture as a guide, the artist loses any personal connection with the piece. It is up to the painter with regard to how he will interpret the picture. Precise lines and colors are essential when it comes to photorealism and this is why brushes and air guns are demanded.

Here is where their talents are best showcased. There is nothing wrong with pop art or abstract pieces but photorealism simply wants to bring people back to recognizable imagery in the art world. Thanks to the Whitney Museum in New York, those who have been part of the photorealistic movement were able to come together.

Their show signaled the battle cry, if you will. The expense of the painting comes from the time needed to make it. Such works of art are spectacular. Much care went into every piece.
