Why Do People Collect Stuff

By: Gradlein

Since childhood, most people must have had collectibles that they wanted to collect. People usually collect meaningful stuff or those that hold their interest for a long while. These include, but are not limited to: bottle caps, stamps, leaves, rocks, shells, action figures, figurines, plastic models, t-shirts, key chains, and even stuff worth over a hundred bucks. Actually, anything can be a collectible as long as someone thinks they deserve to be collected.

People have different reasons for collecting them and some of those are:

Satisfaction - Collecting things is something that most people just love to do. The satisfaction that a collector feels whenever a piece is added to his collection is quite nice. And even more so when the collection is completed.

Interest - Things that people collect are often those that they are already interested in. Some examples include collectible baseball cards for baseball fans or figurines for those who like cute stuff such as Precious Moments figurines. Some people's collections would include those that are currently in style or fashionable for that period of time. The problem with following fads when collecting is that when it becomes out of date, interest in the collectibles drop drastically.

Fun - Collecting collectibles can be fun so many people do it as a hobby. Even as children, the more toys we have, the more fun it gets. With collectibles, it is particularly pleasing to see our own collection growing.

Trading - Some people collect rare or limited pieces of certain collectibles for trading with other people and gaining a profit out of doing so. Alternatively, there are those who collect things that they know they can use to trade for stuff that can be added to their own collection.

Selling - You will often find people selling completed sets of collectibles online for a really high price. Several pieces can also be found being sold for a price especially the limited or rare ones. People who sell pieces or whole sets can either be collectors who are just after the satisfaction of completing them and want to make a profit, or are simply in it just to make money.

The above are just some of the most common reasons but there are others as well. Have you ever had your own collection? What was the reason you've done so?
