A company in Dubai has been tipped for a massive impact on the white label social media scene. Two year old start up H2O New Media is causing a bubble of activity within social media circles. White label social media is not a new concept, in fact there over 30 white label social media players in the industry. H2O in contrast seems to have a very different approach to their white label applications that are focused very heavily on how publishers actually make money from their social media assets rather than delivering funky new widgets. They announced an e-coupons OEM platform last month that uses location based services technology, an article in Digital Production Magazine Middle East stated that H2O had already worked out how to deliver location based coupons to users when they were walking past a store for example. If that’s the case then it seems as though H2O seem to have a significant capability in social media data correlation, certainly that’s the background of their founder – if its true it could be that H2O start to provide white label social media applications to smaller individual or currently traditional print publishing groups that actually drive social media revenue by using data correlation to deliver highly targeted and time sensitive advertising. According to industry insiders H2O has already signed with some major regional publishers in Europe, Australia, the USA, South Africa and Australia that will use the H2O Promos software as a revenue generator for publisher’s social media assets. Certainly this would bring a sigh of relief to companies in the publishing sector. Right now everyone knows the largest challenge faced by any publisher moving to digital is exactly how to make money with their own niche platforms and services. Banner advertising just doesn’t cut it, nor does Google Ad Words, it could be that H2O has delivered a timely and well thought out shot in the arm for traditional print publishers, many of which seem to be going to the wall in the face of the digital revolution. Imagine this, social media platforms hold an incredible amount of data, by applying correlation algorithms across this data you could potentially target advertising delivery to be so relevant it hurts. It’s a little hard to explain but let’s say you post your BMW 3 series to a website for sale, the next day you drive past 1 km of a Mercedes Garage and you get a message on your mobile phone “Free Track Test Drive with Mercedes Today” it is this level of highly targeted data advertising that offers the Gordian knot, the Holly Grail of social media. So what’s the issue? Well traditionally there is so much data to go through that it is impossible to make all of the required connections that make anything make sense. That’s where correlation comes in, correlation is used by Telecommunications operators, banks and many other companies to wade through massive amounts of data and make the relevant associations.
