Where to Get Camcorders

By: Tiki Kittleson

Different Types of Camcorders

In the old days of camcorder technology you generally purchased one that used either a large or small VHS sort of video tape. Those days are long past as camcorders have come a long way since their inception.

As of this writing, the most standard camcorders come in 4 basic media formats, including MiniDV, DVD, Hard Drive, and Flash Memory. The kind you choose depends on your preference for quality, storage capacity and convenience. Technologically speaking you can record high-def quality video with any of these formats. We will quickly examine the four types below:

MiniDV - Utilizes a tiny tape cassette format that allows for 60-90 minutes of video recording time. The camcorder must be used for playback and typically you can transfer it to your computer with a USB or Firewire cable, which can be very slow.

DVD - Just like the term implies, it records straight to a DVD that is put into the camcorder. Recording time can vary from 20 minutes to 60 depending on the quality settings and the type of DVD disc. Because of newer technologies and compatibility problems with a few DVD/Bluray players, this format might be a thing of the past.

Hard Drive Design - Just like what is employed in your computer for storage, many new camcorders are using small hard drives to store film recordings. Depending on the size of the drive, you may get hours of recording time at the highest quality setting. You hook this up to your computer and it works just like another drive so transfers are easy and quick.

Flash Memory - Cheap and fast is what usually comes to mind when describing this sort of format. Flash memory is great because it is typically portable (unless the memory is built in), and transfers easily just like getting photos from your digital camera. Storage capacity depends on the total of flash memory present but you can look forward to at least 30 minutes or more of high quality recording time.

So Which Camcorder Kind is Tops?

When choosing a camcorder to order you should look at the features first and then observe if the media type makes sense for your circumstances.

If you already have cameras that work with flash memory and have card readers, than a flash memory based camcorder may be the finest choice. If you are happy with the MiniDV format and do not mind waiting to move then that is OK as well. For overall video recording time and ease of use we suggest purchasing a hard drive based camcorder. Some of the hard drive models also let media cards to be used for even more storage space, which can be an added plus.
