What to Know to Make the Optimal Purchase

By: Jonathan Jonathan

Leotards and leotard styles are just like any other clothing. In the world of fashion, style trends keep on changing. You can compare the fleeting style trends with the changing seasons. And like seasons, style trends return in the course of time. During one season, the ultimate style statement would mean skintight leotards while the very next season tells us it would be a fashion faux pas to wear anything remotely resembling skintight leotards, but instead to wear leotards with a bit more room and comfort.

Maybe when you were a teenager, you had a pretty long skirt and everybody would go ‘gaga’ over it. However, the next time you wore it, you realized it was totally outdated and it was time for miniskirts. Then after a few years you would see models cat walking the ramp wearing long skirts again. Your time had come and you could once again dare to flaunt your favorite skirt. Nevertheless, all things said and done, there is no denying that fashion is whatever you are most comfortable in and the way you carry yourself in it.

When it comes to leotards, the most important thing is comfort. After all, they are made for movement! There are few cuts and designs that some would want to avoid but others may be suited for. Leotards need to fit your individual body for your optimal freedom of movement. The last thing you want is constriction.

Leotards are close fitting one-piece action garments. They are designed in a two-way lycra stretch fabric for comfort and maximum movement. Acrobats, dancers, and aerialists wear leotards all the time. And sometimes little girls wear them for no other reason than dress up. Leotards can be either sleeved or sleeveless, without too much difference in the body. For example, there is little difference between ballet leotards and gymnastics leotards. They simply differ in their sleeve shapes, styles, and colors, but generally the layout is the same. While long sleeved leotards are generally used for stage shows, short sleeved leotards are generally used during practice sessions.

Choosing the right leotards could be a bit of a challenge. If your figure is great then any number of leotards will flatter you. But if you are on the heavier side, you may want to consider custom-made leotards. When purchasing leotards, in addition to considering color, shape, and size, you should be conscious of what use you need your leotards for. Will they be for performances or practices? Dance, gymnastics, or trapeze? How about just dress up?

Finally, your choice of leotards should be based upon your requirements. The main questions to ask yourself are what makes you feel most comfortable and what works best for your body type. Depending on your body type you may want to look for leotards that have extra lining, offer extra support in the chest area, or extra length in the torso area. Renowned brands like Capezio offer leotards to fit most body types.

A little tidbit about leotards: There is a common anecdote that when a leotard was worn for the first time by a French trapeze artist in 19th century, more people came to get a glimpse of the leotard rather than see his acrobatic skills!
