What is an Online Poker Tracker?

By: Chris C Ducker

Playing a game of poker requires a mix of skills, intuition and luck. While intuition comes with experience, and luck, well, comes when they come, acquiring poker skills can be easy to some, yet hard to others. For those who find it harder, they may lack in the ability to keep track of their game play and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. This is where it comes in handy having a little helper to keep track of your game statistics to guide you through the game.

Originally designed as a training tool, online poker trackers can do a number of tasks that helps a person learn from their strengths and weaknesses. What these trackers do is record the hands you play and your winning percentage, and it also analyzes your calls and betting strategies. With such information, you would be able to detect and learn where you lacked in, or improve in those areas. Yet, nowadays, these trackers have advanced to the ability to even track your opponent’s play, like their winning percentage, calling percentage, and their likelihood to bluff during a flop. And if this tracker were to be used with poker calculators like the odds or equity calculator, a player will be able to statistically improve their game. Such calculators actually reduce the chances of losing as the calculator calculates and analyzes the chances of winning or losing for each hand, as well as tips given to decide on the best hands to play.

Online trackers typically come in two types, one which gives you the profiles of players, and one that lets you build your own profiles of players. The first type teaches you how you can gather information based on digital tables at poker websites. Then, the data is stored in your computer, which can be accessed to through the tracker or a compatible display tool. The second type simply keeps the data of the players so you can see them through their interface. Either type can be helpful to a player, depending on the type of features they prefer.

However, like any other software, online poker trackers have their disadvantages as well. Some people in the poker industry consider the use of such trackers, especially those that tracks other player’s game strategy and loopholes, as an unethical thing to do. Some websites do have rules that prohibit the use of trackers, so players can have a fair game among one another. And because of the constant wins with its help, the pots become smaller and are simply won back by no other except for such players with trackers. Hence, it is only fair to use trackers for a learning experience rather than a winning one.
