What is Self Discipline and How to Achieve It

By: Janet Erickson

It is very important to have self-control; discipline affects virtually every facet of our day-to-day lives, in particular a lack of self-discipline brings about low self-esteem. If you wish to be successful in your life then being able to structure your day is a basic characteristic to have in your make-up.

To help keep you moving forward you should keep a daily journal, in here you can record all the things you have been successful with and all the things where you got somewhat off track and let temptation win. This can help you get the motivation you need to keep yourself disciplined.

Establish goals for yourself; make notes in your diary. It is important that when considering your goals that you establish goals which are realistic and possible within a realistic amount of time. Setting plans that you cannot possibly hope to achieve or which are not realistic will only lead to failure and deminished self-esteem.

Assuming you want self discipline then you need to have confidence in yourself, but if you don't believe in what you can achieve then you cannot possibly hope that others will believe in you. Self-assurance leads to high self confidence and this is half the battle when it comes to being self-disciplined.

Moderation is the key, if youover eat and smoke then cut back. Don't just state you are planning to cut back or stop instantly, this just results in failure. Rather think about the benefits you will attain by stopping; make notes in your diary all the good aspects about what you are doing. If you drink to much for example then aim to cut down by a little everyday and if you are tempted to exceed the limit you established for yourself then discipline yourself. Try doing something different, something you would not normally do and keep in mind the positive aspects to self-disciplining yourself.

If you do fall off the wagon then get right back on, talkto yourself and then move on, don't waste time wondering why or how or think that it will happen again. Promise yourself that you will be more disciplined in the future.

Keep a journal of how you are succeeding with your goals and reward yourself when you have remained self-disciplined. It's ok to penalize yourself for failing but you have to reward yourself for the good also.
