What You need to know about Leg Spider Veins

By: Walter Kopal

Spider leg veins , as ugly and embarrassing as they may be, usually pose no real health risk for those who have them. They are actually broken capillaries found just beneath the skin; their name is derived from the web-like shape they form, and they are frequently red, purple or blue in color. There are a variety of causes for spider veins, and they are more general than some might figure them to be.

Spider veins exist in a clustered form, similar to the web of a spider, hence the name 'spider veins'. The appearance of varicose and spider veins on legs is an extremely regular phenomenon which affects nearly 30 to 40 percent of the entire world's population. Generally, spider veins begin to grow around the age of 40 to 45, and the state is more common in women as compared to men. The most common places where spider and varicose veins develop are the calves, behind the knees, the inner part of the thighs and the face.

Here are the common reasons or causes for the growth of spider leg veins:

Gradual weakening of the blood vessels with advancing age
Obesity
Long periods of standing or sitting in a fixed position
Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause
Wearing tight-fitting clothes or inner wear
Side effect of birth control pills
Hereditary or genetic reasons

Spider leg veins, in most cases are completely harmless, painless and do not need any special medical treatment as such. A moderate to severe case of spider veins on legs makes it difficult and at times, embarrassing for women to wear short dresses, miniskirts or knee-length skirts. Therefore, most people with spider veins are on the lookout for minor remedial procedures which would reduce the visibility and the noticeability of these veins. However, in certain cases involving swelling, cramps, blood clots, itching, pain or severe skin discoloration, it could be essential and advisable to take certain forms of treatment such as: Sclerotherapy, Laser Treatment, Ambulatory Phlebectomy etc.

There is no fool-proof way to avoid all spider veins from occurring. But there are ways to minimize the number of veins you have. They include:

Always wear sunscreen and minimize exposure to the sun.
Elevate your legs when resting and don't cross them
Watch your weight and eat a diet low in salt and high in fiber.
