What To Look For In A New Stroller

By: Marcus Perchowski

So Many Options - What To Choose?

Holy Cow When it comes to baby gear, strollers are certainly found in a very wide variety of shapes, size, options and benefits. When narrowing down the best baby stroller, first contemplate the type of baby transportation you need.

Perhaps you've got in mind something to transport baby and all that equipment similar to that of a traditional stroller. You might find that having more than 1 stroller could be an intelligent move. One for ordinary use and a lighter model for traveling.

We'll examine some basic strollers to consider. As previously alluded to, there really isn't any end to the number of options - and prices - for baby strollers on the market today!

Seat-Carrier Frame Strollers

Seat carrier models are made for newborns who can't sit up on their own yet. For that reason, this type of model doesn’t have an adjustable seat. In fact, there’s no seat! It lays flat and purposely designed to transport a child car seat for any walk-abouts you want to do. No need waking up the baby, simply transfer the car seat over to the stroller and away you go!

Combo Strollers

Combination strollers - or Combos - are a carriage and stroller in one. This kind of stroller can be used with a brand new infant. They are designed to carry your baby laying prone in either a car seat or bassinet.

In theory, you could use this kind of stroller from birth up through the toddler years. (It supports around 40 lbs). As the baby gets older, you can use the adjustable seat attachment for an appropriate sitting setup. These models tend to get rather pricey though costing up to $900. But for this high dollar price tag you get lots of choices such as further storage space for extra baby gear and generous canopies for weather protection.

Travel System Strollers

For traveling, these units are nice! Babies who aren’t capable of sitting up can be moved right in their car seat, which securely fastens to the stroller. When it’s time to head back to the automobile, just remove the seat off the stroller and secure it into the automobile’s safety belt system. Very convenient!

Old School Baby Buggies
These ‘old fashioned’ models of strollers are still in use today. They usually have spoked wheels and tons of room for baby and all that baby gear. Carriages are great for newborns and a few models have removable bassinets that become ‘carrying cots”.

The not-so-good news is that carriages are fairly large, cumbersome and not overly maneuverable. They are particularly awkward to use in crowed city environments where you may encounter quite a few obstacles to contend with. Still, if ‘old fashion’ appeals to you, these units are big and roomy and provide a small amount nostalgia for yesteryear.

Traditional Baby Strollers

Strollers tabbed as 'traditional' the ‘everything including the kitchen sink’ class! Traditional strollers vary from light-weight models all the way to massive, industrial-strength models.

The ‘ironman’ models are built extra durable with deep compartments and plenty of room. They have engineered shock absorbers on all the wheels and are made to take plenty of punishment. But they're bulky. Yes, they are firm and stable, but rather massive.

There are numerous options found in traditional strollers such as snack trays, plenty of carry-along space, one-handed folding capabilities, and adjustable seating. These are truly all-in-1 models and may be designed to accommodate bassinets and car seats. But they do have a tendency to be a bit on the heavy side so traveling with them is more of a task.

Umbrella Strollers

Since the handles on these strollers resemble those found on an umbrella, they are aptly named. These strollers are extremely lightweight and truly convenient for traveling. Most umbrella strollers fold easily but the ride tends to be a bit rough (depending on the terrain). They make a great additional stroller and the cost is very inexpensive.

All-Terrain Strollers

While on the topic of terrain, we like to take our babies EVERYWHERE we go! And that includes off the beaten path. This is where an all-terrain stroller comes in handy.

All terrain strollers are tough and will take the punishment thanks to oversized bicycle-like tires. And yes, they are inflatable! And there are only three of them. Bicycle-like tires give the baby a gentler ride. And they're capable of handling heavier cargo so it makes them ideal for ‘larger’ babies and also when you’re hauling around extra baby gear.

Jogging strollers

Since we include our babies in many of our activities, we want a stroller that is as mobile as we are. There are strollers specifically made for active moms and dads who wish to include their babies with them on their jogs.

A jogging stroller is a three-wheeled apparatus with giant, air-filled tires. Jogging strollers have extra long handles that positions the stroller a bit more ahead of the jogger so jogging legs have ample space to run and not be constrained by the stroller frame.

Safety options on this sort of stroller include a front brake and a wrist strap so everything stays under control at all times. This is vitally important. Their tough design enables the stroller to travel off road similar to an all-terrain stroller.

As you can see, there are many baby stroller choices to fit in with your personal lifestyle. From traditional baby buggies, all-in-one travel units, light-weight umbrella strollers and extra hardy strollers for on-the-go families, you’re sure to find the proper baby stroller to enrich your individual style and baby transportation needs.
