What Makes the Osa Peninsula So Great for Fishing
The Osa Peninsula is located in a tiny patch of Costa Rica's last remaining tropical rain forests. When you first lay your eyes on this beautiful area, you will be impressed by how small this piece of land really is. There is ocean on all four sides of the peninsula, as well as dense forests and lands that have been put to other uses by the locals. It has been deemed a small paradise by many who have ventured here. The pristine beaches and crystal clean ocean waters are the most alluring aspects of this place. It's home to over 300 species of birds, as well as all types of insects, monkeys, wild cats of all sizes, poisonous snakes, crocodiles and many more exotic creatures.
There are many beaches here for swimming and snorkeling. The northern part of the Osa Peninsula begins at the small village of Sierpe and continues along the Rio Sierpe, as well as the Sierpe Delta, to the Pacific Coast. The forests along the south allow for the flora and fauna to flourish here as well. This area is known as among the most biologically diverse locations in the world. Osa (meaning bear) is named for the three "ant bears" that inhabit the Peninsula. It is the least populated by humans and not highly traveled by vacationers because of the lack of resorts and hotels in the area. People that come to the Osa Peninsula love to fish here but prefer to stay in larger cities of Costa Rica instead or one of the neighboring islands.

Many different species
However, there tends to be the occasional flock of people who come here to fish these tranquil waters all throughout the year. The waters of the Osa Peninsula are great for fishing due to the vast numbers of different species of fish here and the fact that the waters of Costa Rica play a huge part in the population growth of fish that thrive here. The warm waters and mild conditions allow for a healthy breeding ground for the fish. Many fish in the Osa Peninsula stay in the shallow parts of the water, which makes for an easy catch for first time anglers.

For the more experienced fishermen, you can rent a charter and head out to open sea for a more challenging fishing experience. Throw some shrimp or squid bait onto the end of your line and you have the opportunity to reel in some really big fish. From giant grouper, blue marlin, snapper and tuna to redfish, amberjack and many others, you are in for some great catches. With such a vast variety to catch, there is no telling what you might reel in.

Some of the larger game fish will, at times, stay in shallow waters in order to keep warm. Many anglers enjoy the fun of playing catch and release all day in the shallows. This can be great fun for beginners and pros. The Osa Peninsula is riddled with sandy beaches, piers and rocks that you can fish from, as well. The waters here are perfect for fly fishing, as you can easily walk into the ocean until you are almost waist deep and still see your feet below you. The currents here are pretty calm most of the time, so you don't really have to worry about large waves ruining a great day of fishing. It seems that no matter how deep in the ocean you get here in the Osa Peninsula, you can still see straight to the bottom.

Charter adventures
Charters are a great way to gather as a group to do some fishing, too. Costa Rica and the Osa Peninsula are home to world renowned sportsfishing. Charters full of eager anglers leave from the piers daily, heading toward the fishing hot spots in the ocean. The saltwater fishing here is a world-class event. Many professional anglers love the thrill of pulling a 500-pound catch out of these waters. There is nothing like it for them. If you love to fish and can plan a getaway such as this, you should definitely come to the Osa Peninsula for a fishing experience you won't soon forget.
