Many people believe that people who have Harley Davidson motorcycles are aggressive, tattoo-laden, testosterone-fuelled men who drink hard alcohol and wind up big bar fights. While this caricature makes for a good Hollywood movie, the large majority of Harley Davidson riders are calm, sociable individuals who give back to society. Harley-davidson has gone to great lengths to create a community of brotherhood among individuals who own Harleys. The hugely successful Harley Owners Group (HOG) has more than a million members all over the Earth. With local divisions around the globe, members unite in sharing their obsession for the Harley Davidson lifestyle. Harley-davidson riders include men and women ranging in age from eighteen to eighty eight. Some harley owners have been riding Harley Davidson motorcycles for over fifty years. Loads of of the servicemen who fought in WWII became avid lovers of the motorbike, as they were often used for transportation in war zones. A certain number of these soldiers still ride today. The female population of HD owners has significantly increased throughout the last couple of decades. Maybe the most famed female Harley motorcyclists are Avis and Effie Hotchkiss. In 1915, the mother-daughter duo traveled from New York to California on a three speed V-Twin with a sidecar. One more female innovator was Linda Dugeau, co-founder of the Motor Maids, Inc. Linda started riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the 1930s. She rode all over the United States and accounts of her travels were published in Motorcyclist magazine. In 1938, Dugeau began establishing a network of female motorcyclists, which formally became known as The Motor Maids. The group was chartered with the American Motorcyclist Association in the year of 1941, meaning that it is the oldest motorbike organization for females in North America. Girls of all ages and backgrounds are becoming interested in motorcycles and the lifestyle they offer. Not only are more women owning street bikes, they are also participating in motorbike racing. Female stars, such as singer, Pink and sexy model, Niki Taylor, are getting into the driver's seat of Harleys and suggesting other girls to ride. Bike riding is quickly becoming a favorite family activity. Safety equipment is available to protect children while riding and include tether straps, helmets, jackets, chaps, and gloves. Touring bikes and cruisers make it relatively easy to take the children on a weekend camping or road trip. Numerous members of the military are devoted Harley riders. They love the feeling they experience when they get on their motorbikes and network with fellow Harley devotees at sponsored events or charity rides. Harley Davidson supports various rides for U.S. troops and Veterans. A customary trait of people who ride Harley Davidson motorbikes is a giving nature. Harley owners frequently head out on on charity rides to assist charitable associations or to provide for the needs of someone in their indigenous community. Harley riders have raised large amounts of cash in their fundraising efforts and have donated to cancer research, Alzheimer's research, Autism and many other worthy causes. There's a tremendous amount of brotherhood and friendship amongst Harley owners. They are a group of passionate people who enjoy the thrill of adventure. One thing is for sure... there's no other activity that unites such a diverse assortment of people from all walks of life and age brackets.
