With today's technology, you can talk to someone a continent away as you view their reactions to what you say via webcam. This interconnectedness has definitely changed how we live, work, and maintain relationships. With today's technology, distance has become a relative concept and because of networking, communicating with someone, whether near or far, takes just a couple of clicks. Explaining how this system of weaving computers together can take some efforts especially since there are several types of connections. Computer networking is made up of several computers or devices hooked up through a common system. Computers can communicate with each other through these connections, which then mean that they can share information and data, even if it's not stored in the computer's files. This connection is made possible by a combination of hardware and software, which are configured to allow computers be join the network and be accessible. While this topic has a broad range, there are basic concepts that make it easy to understand how connection happens. Perhaps the easiest way to understand this is to define connections by the scope or area coverage. Networking can be just as basic as having one computer network being connected to other devices. This type of connection is called a Personal Area Network. A bigger scope of coverage is the Local Area Network (LAN), which spans a small area like a building, an office, or a school. Usually, these kinds of connections used Ethernet technology, though a wired kind of LAN network is also possible. Campus Area Network (CAN) meanwhile is a connection which is typically found in colleges and university. This network spans a campus which is made up of a number of buildings and has a wider area. Other types include the Wide Area Network (WAN) the metropolitan area network (MAN) and the experimental global area network (GAN). Perhaps the most recognizable kind of networking is the internetwork, more popularly called the Internet, which connects computers across the globe. By connecting two or more computers through routing technology, you are able to browse the Web, talk to a person who is from another country, and even hold online conferences where participants are from different parts of the country or the world. This connection is made possible by three layers of the OSI Basic Reference Model like, for example, a router. Note, however, that this kind of connection can also refer to connections made by public, private, industrial, or governmental networks. The three variants of the internetwork include intranet, extranet, and the internet. The Internetwork kind of connection is based on the Internet Protocol Suite. The world is more connected and everything is easier to access due to networking. By having a system that connects people despite of distance, communication has never been easier. Through programs like email and chat, it feels like everyone, no matter where they are, can be within arm's reach.
