Einstein was correct about the definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results), then America is full-throttle, bat-sh*t crazy. We draw close to the final Election Day of the first decade of the 21st century, and it is clear that there is nothing new under the sun. After witnessing the near-wreckage of our country, it seems those on the left and right almost unanimously point the finger of blame at our government. If you are on the left side of the dial, you may view government's lack of strength and oversight as allowing for the genesis of the mortgage mess, the destruction of New Orleans and the creation of "two" Americas. You may view our preemptive invasion of Iraq as a natural consequence not of 9-11, but of an overfed military industrial hammer in want of a nail. You may see Obama as an overburdened, but essentially good man and leader. Alternately, you may see our government as a reflection of our country. Battered, but resilient. Off-track, but essentially intact that is, until November 2008. Post-Obama, perhaps you see us transformed into a freshly-bloated nanny state, intent on removing guns from homes, God from schools and corn from the syrup that sweetens our Mountain Dew. You may see George W. Bush as an overburdened, but essentially good man and leader. Perhaps neither view above accurately captures the true causes of the predicaments we now face. Perhaps it is within this vacuum of uncertainty and partisanship that we allow the filthy, corrupt, PAC and lobby-infested status quo to persist and flourish. Of course Last January's Supreme Court decision didn't really help matters. It blows my mind when so-called libertaians like Penn Jillette defend the "sanctity" of the Supremes when they go and rule on shit like Bush v Gore and the January decision.....but I'm digressing. Enough for now I guess - - I hope you'll visit my website at dadinleftfield dot com. It is new but I am pretty pleased with it so far. *Assuming the validity of lex parsimoniae, that the simplest explanation is like they correct one, I say things have unfolded today because of a few key decisions, as follows: 70s the economy languishes and the Carter Administration exposes policy gaps within liberal, humanitarian governance. 1980s - Reagan comes to power vowing to restore honor and dingnity, cruash the Communists and stop prfligate spending. Soul man Lee Atwater becomes the prototype know classified as Rovus Pussb **(the Carter Administration probably wouldn't have happened without VietNam, Nixon and milquetoast Ford. Just Obama couldn't have happened without the Luddite Bush, King of genus Zealotus Megachurchamus . and so the cycle repeats through time immemorial...)
