Ways to Purchase Premium Souvenirs

By: Robert Penney

Traveling can open up new and exotic worlds for you to experience. Of course, the best part of traveling are the souvenirs you buy to help you remember your trip. I would like to give you some suggestions on what separates a superior souvenir from a mediocre souvenir to help you when you are shopping on your trip. Here are some tips for shopping smart when you travel.

You probably don't know that the first items collected by travelers were seashells. Old time sea captains collected shells from the exotic places that they sailed to. When they got back home, they would proudly show off their shells by giving them a place of great respect, known as a wonder chamber, in their house. By associating a collected object with its place of origin, souvenirs allow their owners to reminisce about their travels. Purchasing souvenirs made in that region are the best way to display the culture of that area. Often there are objects that have been created to look like native objects but have been made elsewhere, and are not the best choice of souvenirs if you have a valuable collection to start with.

A popular item that many people seek out is the snowglobe. You can find them almost everywhere such as airport gift shops, cheap outlets, and souvenir shops, promoting almost any place. Snow globes do have a unique past, however, you don't want to get one if you are able to buy an authentic souvenir instead. While many people own snow globes featuring familiar Florida scenes, it's much more special to own something unique and uncommon, such as a vintage label from a crate of oranges, or perhaps an attractive find from an antique store.

Another great example of a souvenir from Florida would be ephemera pieces that are brightly printed that represent the cultural diversity and amazing history of the Sunshine State. Try to buy the highest quality items on your trip that your finances allow. The history and culture of your destination should be easily represented by the souvenirs you choose to collect.

Don't forget that you can try to negotiate a price for something just about anywhere. As an example, let's think of the opportunity to visit the historical city of St. Petersburg in Russia. You have your heart set on a Russian nesting doll matroyshka as the perfect keepsake. But with so many nesting dolls to select from, it then becomes a matter of trying to figure out which ones suit you the best. Your best bet is to look for a doll that has been hand painted as well as a smooth varnish finish, and an authentic signature on the bottom or underside.

The best choice for these dolls are ones that are painted with the same color tones as their nested duplicates, with consistent painting (all blonde haired, all with city scapes on their bellies, etc.) and especially the ones with gold leaf or very detailed gilt. All of these factors are the true keys to the value of the piece.

When considering the type of souvenir to purchase, think about how you'll feel when you've returned from your travels, and imagine the type of object you'd like to have in your home to remind you of your holiday memories. Always think about what you have learned and discovered on your trip, and take that information into account. You'll want something that can be a precious item to you for years to come. Selecting souvenirs is a way to bring a meaningful piece of another culture in a faraway place back to your home.

When you pack, don't bring any clothes that you don't absolutely need. No one wants to carry excessively weighty suitcases. You will want to include one outfit for every kind of weather. Even a beach in the tropics can have cool evenings and uncomfortably cool air conditioning. But if you can, bring clothing you can wash and wear again.

Never leave home without the shoes that you feel most comfortable walking in. Keep in mind the image you will want to be projecting with your clothes. Depending on what you wear, you might attract pickpockets and thieves because your clothes scream tourist. You should also keep in mind that if you lose your baggage, it could be around three days before you get it back. You want to let other people in on your plans. For safety's sake, leave your schedule and the addresses and phone numbers of your hotels with a relative or acquaintance, and enjoy your travel with peace of mind.
