Water Warnings! How Does Our Drinking Water get Contaminated

By: John Tolley

How is it that the most abundant and natural resource on earth, the resource (besides air) that our body needs the most and can live the least amount of time without, and probably the absolute most regularly used resource get polluted and become dangerous to drink? I am always shocked to hear warnings on the news about our drinking water, or to taste that occasional foul taste of our city water. I always imagine our drinking water in great big tower or ravine, protected by the concrete walls of the damn formed around it, impervious from anything that could possibly contaminate it. Yet, almost yearly we have days or weeks where there are warnings against drinking the water. How does this happen, and what could possibly be in the water?

Further to my dismay is that by the time these warnings go into effect, our water has likely been contaminated for a while. Even more so often, no warning has put into place, as the contamination is not severe enough warrant public attention. That is a tad bit disheartening.

Contamination most usually come from rain run off. Excess rain pushes toxic chemicals into our drink water from the runoff that occurs. It pushes chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, weed killers, detergents, and other chemicals into reservoirs, ground waters, and rivers. These waters are carried through water treatment plants, which do not cleanse waters of toxic waste, and thus brought to our tap. Yum.

The other likely way contamination occurs is through run off from factories and other industrail properties. Though polluting the waters is illegal and has sever ramifications, industrial waste is nearly impossible to control. Toxic materials almost inevitably end up in our water, no matter how many preventive measures a factory takes. In well developed countries like the US and England contaimination is not so bad. In counties like China where there is little regulation on pollution the contamination is at much higher of a level. May people die or have life threatning sickness from the water. That is why water treatment is so important in thrid world countries, but pollution is just another one of the problems we face when treating water.

The last, and probably most repulsive way that a water becomes contaminated is through animal and human waste. Each time we, or animals, consume food and water, those items are flushed back through our bodies. With animals, unnatural toxins such as antibiotics, and growth hormones are put back into the water supply. Human contamination can include everything from caffeine, to prescription and over the counter medications.

Protecting yourself from the water you consume is possible, and starts with a water filtration system or drinking water system. One of these systems is worth every penny; I want to be safe consuming what my body needs the most.
