Watch Your Next Bite, Is It a High Cholesterol Food?

You may be aware of the Good and Bad cholesterol levels. While the cholesterol required for proper functioning of our brain and metabolic process is generated by our body, getting the right balance of good and bad cholesterol is still a challenge. Having the knowledge of high cholesterol foods will help us in getting it right.

While plant products are healthy, animal products are rich in saturated fat or the bad fat which has an adverse affect on your heart. Food containing polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat (the good fat) can help lower your bad cholesterol.

Food high in trans fat and saturated fat are all around us- cheese, pies, cakes, doughnuts and many more we know is bad as we pop it into our mouth. Most take away food, processed meat including sausages and full fat dairy are also bad for us.

Not all seafood is safe. Prawns, sardines, shrimp, crab and even veal should be avoided. Same goes with turkey, duck, organs such as brain and liver. Coconut oil and palm oil are amongst the most harmful fat.

We may be indulging in dim sums, minced meat, butter and coconut cream. Stay away from food high in saturated fat. Pay more attention to saturated fats rather than cholesterol content as they make your liver produce more cholesterol than required.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the cholesterol in the food around us. The recommended dietary intake of cholesterol is 300mg per day and reduces to 200mg if you suffer from high LDL levels.

It is highly advisable to get plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables along with whole grains to bump up your good cholesterol. Fish is also a rich source, make sure its not battered and deep fried.

So what should you eat? Apple, garlic, soybean products, dried peas, tofu, papaya (paw paw), wheat germ, broccoli, spinach and kidney beans are some of the easily accessible ones. Do not forget to go through the food labels for the various fat content.

Try and snack on plain nuts such as peanuts, cashews, Brazil nuts and hazelnuts. Order wholegrain bread at the cafe and buy lean meat at the supermarket. Take the first step and stop your arteries from clogging.

Including foods such as nuts, legumes and cereals are very beneficial. This includes rice, pasta and dried peas. Substitute your cooking oil with olive oil. Staying fit with ideal weight will certainly help.
