Summary: This new comedy series uses a mother's point of view to shed light on the lives of a middle-class family in the Midwest. The show focuses on the Heck family's life in an Indiana suburb and is narrated by Frankie, a dedicated-though frazzled-mother who works at a local car dealership and volunteers for school functions. Father Mike works at a quarry and takes a more laid back approach to most things, but backs up Frankie with force when the need arises. Oldest child Axl, a snarky, surly, high schooler, spends much of his time napping and roams around the home shirtless. Geeky, gangly, braces-wearing Sue is trying to navigate her way through junior high, join the cool crowd, and avoid Axl's endless onslaught of taunts, none of which she does with much success. Youngest child Brick is in elementary school and is the academic in the family, but suffers from near-crippling social anxieties and possesses an odd habit of repeating words he just said back to himself in a loud whisper. Starring Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn, the Warner Bros. Television pilot was written by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, who also serve as executive producers. The Middle," which follows the antics of the quirky Heck family in Indiana, entered its second season on ABC Wednesday night. It also marked the show's first guest star of the season: Doris Roberts. Yup, the mom from "Everybody Loves Raymond." She reunited with "Middle" lead and "Raymond" star Patricia Heaton, playing the teacher of youngest child and strange, whispering savant, Brick (named after the Indianapolis Brickyard).

Later, Brick, an excellent student who loves school, suddenly refuses to go, telling his mom in his signature, whispering repeat to himself: "I'm taking a personal day... personal day." When Frankie returns for another parent-teacher meeting, asking the teacher to back off, Roberts, in her trademark, Marie Barone armchair-parenting, scoffs, "Now your kid's calling the shots?" and says Frankie's a "glommy mommy." Frankie, like Debra Barone so often did, left in an agitated huff. Ahh. I've missed that antagonistic relationship those two portrayed so well on "Raymond" -- I could watch bitter in-laws pick at each other's scabs all the live long day. (As long as they're not my in-laws. Or scabs.) At home, still mourning his lost backpack, Brick looks up at his mom and asks, "Is there something wrong with me?" Realizing she made her "happiest kid miserable," Frankie knew she had to get that backpack back -- and she did, after leaping into the garbage truck that picked it up. She even had time for some light rummaging. ("There's a lot of shampoo left in it," she exclaims, picking up a bottle of the stuff.) But even after Frankie recovers Brick's "friend," the fickle kid says, "Nah, I'll just keep the new one. I can't tell if it's you or the backpack, but something smells rank." He tosses a perfect, sassy wave of dismissal. "The Middle" stars Patricia Heaton as Frankie, Neil Flynn as Mike, Charlie McDermott as Axl, Eden Shur as Sue, Atticus Shaffer as Brick and Chris Kattan as Bob.
