Then #2 and #3 pick their answers, until the fourth player gets stuck with whichever answer is left, even if she knows a correct one, just because she said "a million" instead of "a billion" to an entirely different question a minute ago. She doesn't get a choice. As a fan of all things fair and good in this world, this tiny detail completely infuriates me. But look, here I am, thinking too hard about it again! As its name tells us, the questions on 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show are just a means to an end. Unfortunately, the exit methods are too silly and the stakes are non-existent, so all of the drama of the contestants crying and saying, "I want my mommy!" as they await their fate just feels fake. They're scared, yes, but they don't actually think anything dangerous is going to happen to them. They're nervously laughing and smiling like camp kids about to get launched on the Blob. Also, $50,000 just isn't that much money anymore. Losing a shot at it because you didn't know how many times a famous pervert got arrested just doesn't sting that much. It's like, "I didn't win $50,000, but at least I got this free trip to Extreme Six Flags." On 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show, everyone is a winner. Or nobody is. It's hard to tell. In conclusion, it's a good show to mindlessly watch with your mom while you eat some sorbet on a hot summer night before bed. Use the 57 minutes you're not paying attention (the other three are when people leave the game show) to catch up with her. On the rim of a rock quarry in the blistering June heat, three people are huddled in spacesuits with metallic jet packs on their backs, worrying aloud about which jet pack is about to be turned on. Five camera operators are sprawled around them, capturing every groan and sigh and exhortation to God. What could this be besides a television game show? Actually, it is the setting for what may be the strangest offering of the summer, "101 Ways to Leave a Game Show," to be shown on Tuesdays on ABC, beginning this week. The jet packs are mere props, but the three contestants attached to them are not supposed to know that. One of them is about to be jolted 10 feet in the air and yanked 350 feet into the quarry on a zip line, landing near another camera position at the bottom. "There are five of these eliminations in each show," the executive producer Matt Kunitz said proudly as he walked toward an outcropping of the quarry. With its frightening ejections of contestants over cliffs, out of cannons and off of trucks, "101 Ways" is a stunt show disguised as a game show. ABC hopes that it has some of the same appeal as "Wipeout," the obstacle-course competition that humiliates some contestants and celebrates others, which starts its fourth season on Thursday. What the two share, said Mr. Kunitz, who oversees both shows for the production company Endemol USA, is tongue-in-cheek humor and a family-friendly sensibility. "I think my brand is these big, family stunt shows," he said. "Wipeout" has become such a hit for ABC that the network ordered a fifth season before the fourth season started; ABC is showing a preview of the show on Tuesday at 8 p.m. to give "101 Ways" a leg up at 9. "101 Ways" was jointly conceived by Endemol's American and British units, and was first put on the air in Britain, where it ran on the BBC last summer.
