VW Camper Interiors - What to Look For

By: Nick Wright

If you're looking at the interior of VW Campers, the normal rules apply, look at a number of Camper models – you’ll get a much better idea, not only of what configurations are available, but also what you would like.

Find out what conversion it is.

Is it a good quality VW camper conversion, or a DIY job, with windows added to a van? VW had a relationship with Westfalia in Germany who made broad range of interiors into the VW bus – in a range of designs. In the UK there were Devon (which had a roof which was hinged at the front), there are models which had a roof hinged at the sidesuch as Dormobile, Holdsworth and Danbury (whose professional conversions were from vans.
Find out the VW camper's history. It’s also likely to be reflected in the price :goodfactory conversions like Westfalia hold their price better and the design of the units is normally high.

Examine the pop top

If the camper has a pop top, then ask the seller to show you how to put it up– check for problems in the cantilever mechanism and check what state the canvas is in. These can be replaced, but does the price allow for this and do you know how to get it done customised, look even closer – it may be superficial “tarting up”. Some owners take this route and don't do the stuff that's really !
Take a careful look over. Is it clean and tidy? Messy and dirty? Somewhere in-between? How original is the interior? What fittings and appliances are there? What’s been replaced? What materials and finish have been used? What standard are the fittings and finishes? Do you like the layout?
Look inside cupboards to check for signs of obvious leaks – they may have long-standing water leaks through the side vent for example. Look for leaks round the edge of any roof vents. This is not a large task, but damage to the roof lining by incoming water, can be extensive.
Check the seats – what state is the foam in? Foam doesn’t always look bad – however, you’ll know once you’ve slept on it whether or not it needs replacing! What state are the covers in? Seat covers can be replaced quite easily either professionally or as a DIY job.
Ask the owner how the fridge is powered - is it gas,or leisure battery and hook upand check if it works. Beware if the fridge is being used as a cupboard! Also ask about the cooker and any other appliances – when were they installed? Get the seller to demonstrate them in use.

balancing budget and time
What do you want to payfor a VW Camper? How much work can you put into sorting out the interior of a VW camper? What skills do you have? You can re-fit completely – and it can be a interesting project with a number of resources, advice and examples around to help you. There are also a number of companies who do it professionally.

It's you decision. But do your homework and check out the interior] as carefully as you check the body and mechanics, before you buy a VW Camper.
