VP vs VP War On Terror Views

By: Rob Schmidt

Cheney vs Biden and the Obama Administration became larger when the former VP's daughter, Liz Cheney, accused Vice President Biden of downplaying the threat from Al Qaeda and suggested the Obama administration is not keeping the country safe by being soft on terror. Chicken or egg, Biden told the American public this weekend that another Sept 11th attack is unlikely. Are you crazy! We haven't solved the ease of border crossings but the current administration isn't concerned about another attack - oh brother!

I had at least some hope, however misguided, that this administration would be taking the threat on our home land a little more serious since they have been very active using Predator Drones in Pakistan to target Al Qaeda's leadership. Additionally, it appears the administration has hit the brakes on the Federal Court trial that AG Eric Holder announced might not be in New York City. While they are misguided to keep this enemy combatant in the US court system, at least they seemed to have some common sense when they took a second look at the monumental disaster that trial would be and the grave danger New York City would become if the trial is held there for the years it will take to complete.

While it is very easy for some to dismiss the thoughts former VP Cheney because of his polarizing personality, how can anyone defend a statement that Al Qaeda is too weak to attack the United States in a major way. Is this "confidence" due to the multiple Al Qaeda attacks in the US during the past few months only being small ones, that is if you call shooting up a military base and attempting to blow up an airplane small. How can you come to this conclusion?

The failure to take the threat of Al Qaeda seriously is, in the words of both Cheney's "dead wrong" which seems to be an understatement. It seems like a more accurate description is "catastrophically wrong" in my opinion. Any prison guard will tell you that people sentenced to life in jail are very dangerous because they have 24/7 to think about how they can cause a problem - I think the same thing can be said about Al Qaeda leaders who are perfectly willing to live in a cave and devise ways to destroy the infidels in the United States, us if you haven't been paying attention.

So what can we do? All incumbents, Democrat and Republican alike, are deathly afraid to meet the voters this fall - at least the third of Senators and the House of Representatives are. We've seen several members announce they will not run for re-election with another today in Senator Bayh becoming the latest. This nervousness can be exacerbated by a phone call, email, letter, or pony express communication to them to let them know national security is the highest priority or you will vote the bums out. Does anyone not have the time to do that for the sake of this country? Sound off if you have an opinion.
