Useful Guide for beginners on Central Heating Insurance

By: Lex5 Braxtor5

You can get pretty much anything insured these days. Beyond mandatory insurance products such as building and car cover if you value something as important enough to warrant an insurance policy chances someone will be prepared to cover it for you. Whilst different insurance products for different items and purposes will inevitably vary the basic principle remains consistent - to safeguard something you value, whether for financial or personal reasons, from any eventualities that could cause damages to your life.

Moving a step down the ladder of importance we find central heating insurance, such as the products offered by British Gas. These policies are not as widely used as they should be – for while they are not as necessary as insuring the very structure of a house, the central heating system of a home is most definitely a necessity and repairing it can cost a lot. The other problem is that actually getting someone to repair it can take time, and living without hot water or heating is no fun, especially in winter. But the most serious implication is the possibility of a faulty central heating system, which could be leaking potentially fatal carbon monoxide.

There is a range of plans on the market. The most basic types are generally just service plans that fulfil the minimum requirements, including annual servicing and safety checks. No repair work or spare parts are included. But anyone taking out one of these plans, unless their boiler is still under warranty, only has to pay a small amount more per month to upgrade to a policy that covers repairs and spare parts. Particularly if a boiler is getting close to the end of its working life, this extra money is well spent. Customers need to choose at this stage whether they just want their boiler covered, or if they want to extend their cover to the rest of the central heating system, radiators and such like.

One thing to watch out for when choosing a policy is any exemptions or limits written into the policy document. Some providers will limit the number of call outs per year or stipulate a maximum cost of inclusive repairs for a given period. As with all types of insurance, don’t just choose the cheapest premium without making sure the level of cover is adequate.
