Use the Innovative Techniques of Audiologists to Improve Your Hearing Impairments

By: Kimrya Sniderd

You may wonder what exactly an audiologist is, it is a specialist who helps diagnose, avoid and treat hearing issues. Besides seeing patients with hearing disorders who have specifically sought treatment by an audiologist, they also examine people who have balance and nerve problems to identify their specific disorders. Like other allied health care roles, audiologists are in increasing demand mainly for older people.

Private practices in audiology, community clinics, industrial environments, hospitals, neighborhood education organizations, university clinics, schools for the hearing impaired, and audiology/medical practices are among the number of clinical and non-clinical places where you will find audiologists.

Due to the need for audiologists out there, especially in terms of supplying hearing aids, it would do you well to investigate your options as to participating in this field. The patients examined and treated by audiologists range in age from babies who are premature to elderly persons.

The job of an auditory specialist may include: teaching clients the proper use of hearing equipment, providing specific therapy programs for hearing impaired individuals, or assisting clients who have experienced hearing loss to learn ways to cope with their condition.

Although traditionally the young have not typically suffered from hearing problems, the profession has seen an increase recently. 85 percent of today's hearing problems, however, still belong to those 55 years of age and older. More young people are beginning to have hearing loss, however, largely as a result of loud music and industrial noise. It is not necessarily just the volume of the music that affects the younger generation though. Due to the advances in portable music and its saturation within the public, it could be enough to cause hearing issues in youth.

That means that music can now be listened to in small spaces, such as inside cars, or through headsets or ear buds, so that the sound is right next to or inside the ears.

Due to concerns that they cannot hear properly, some choose to have an initial baseline hearing test. At least 50 percent of these individuals do not have any hearing problems. However, this suggests that the younger generations are more aware of hearing loss.

Audiologists also will work closely with an ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT) to find the cause of the hearing loss. An Impedance Battery is used at first by and audiologist to determine the integrity of the eardrum, done through an air pressure test. This tool will also examine the area located behind the ear drum, and the nerves that travel between the ears and the brain.

Another test involves a tool which measures if the individual is hearing spoken words adequately. Every person is unique and will suffer a different level of hearing loss, for this reason each hearing aid will work for an individual differently. The audiologist will need to explain to each individual how their hearing aid will work and affect them. In certain cases, it will be the support services, such as counseling, that will be the most essential for the person whose hearing is impaired. Counseling is used to both explain the hearing aid and to discuss options the patient can choose to improve their situation.

If you want to be an audiologist, you have to do post graduate work, which is unique to allied health care. With a master's degree in audiology the necessary requirement to become an audiologist today, it may one day be possible to enter the field with a doctoral degree.

Medical professionals are needed more than ever before as the population continues to grow and as there are more elderly people than ever before. Hearing technology is becoming more important and will continue to be so in the future; convenient devices and quality treatment are developing and evolving every day. This means that more people expect their treatment by an audiologist to be exceptional each time they go.
