Understanding Spread Betting

By: Alex9 McKoy9

Spread betting is a general term applied to various types of wagers in which winning or losing depends on the outcome of the game. In contrast to its more popularly known predecessor, spread betting is a high risk gambling in which a player can win or lose far more than the amount he officially wagered for. This game is based on the range of possible outcomes, known as the spread. The player places a bet, and his earnings or loss will depend how accurate his prediction will be.

Spread betting does not favor the stronger team but gives equal opportunity for the gamblers rooting for the opposite team. They are aided by the bookmaker, the person who charges the gamblers with a commission and the acts as counterparty for the bet’s participants. At times, spread betting also gives way to a strong team to fight with a weak team. This however, does not discourage the fans of the weaker team to bet since the methods of spread betting holds a certain advantage for all its participants.

Spread betting uses the word spread in a different way. Since this game is dependent on the outcome of an event, the middleman or the bookkeeper will set a spread or range of possible outcomes in the game. The spread will be in points system.

If a player bets on the strong team, the points will be subtracted from the strong team’s final score. If the resulting number is still higher than the losing team’s score, then the player wins, but if it is lower than the weaker team’s score then, the gambler loses.

The same thing happens when a gambler puts his wager on the weaker team, only this time, the points are added to the weaker team’s final score. If the weaker team’s score combined with the points is already higher than the stronger team’s score, then the gambler wins. But if the combined points and the weak team’s final score is still lower than the strong team’s score, then the gambler loses.

Spread betting has an alternative, which is called the side bet. Side bet wagers on the total score accumulated in the game, regardless who won. This type of spread betting is very popular since the gambler doesn’t have to choose among the teams. This type of spread betting is also one of the most profitable, or in a loser’s case, unprofitable. If a middleman sets a maximum spread, and the total score for the said game went over the maximum spread, then every point over that maximum spread will be multiplied to a preset amount. For example, the participants, or the gamblers and the middleman have set that every excess point will be worth twenty-five monetary units each. The middleman sets the spread at forty eight points. However, at the end of the game, the total score sums up to fifty. Then, every point over forty eight will be worth twenty five monetary units. The gambler will take fifty bucks home.
