Understanding Enviroment Management Theories And Policy

By: Zekizade

Enviroment management is based upon studying the way in which human kind impacts upon the welfare of the global environment. It explores the relationship between the environment and humans and how the negative impact can be reduced in order for the future of human societies to be protected.

There are three essential parts to the management theory of the environment: politics, programs and resources. There are various agencies that are concerned with studying the environmental management and how to put theory into practice including government agencies, trade associations and social pressure groups. All of these groups try to use the three aspects of management theory in order to better strike a balance between the needs of the environment and the realities of business and personal uses of the earth's resources.

Increasingly there are ways that the management of the environment affects business of all different levels. There are now laws and legislation that is related to the environment and places responsibility not only on large multinational businesses, but can also affect small business.

There is also legislation in place that affects regular people and their homes too. Depending on where you live and the type of legislation that has been passed in your area you will have different amounts of responsibility relating to the environment. In many countries for example local councils have placed water restrictions on industry and private homes. There may be set hours for watering your garden or washing your car and in some local council areas using hoses has been banned altogether.

There may also be management techniques that are put into place to encourage certain behavior in both business, industry and domestic areas. This can often include offering financial incentives or breaks to use certain technology that is gentler on the environment. Some local governments have put into place tax breaks to those residents that put in solar heating into their homes.

When trying to establish an effective environmental management system (EMS), it is important to know about ISO 14001, which is an international standard to use. This standard is set up for manufacturers to try to balance the need for maintaining profit level while also being sensitive to the impact their operations have on the environment. There is now more understanding that environmental manufacturing does not have to be exclusive to profit.

Included in the ISO 14001 are various aspects that need to be considered. These include: general requirements, environmental policy, planning to implement and operation, checking and corrective action and Management review. The format of the policy allows people to assess different areas of their operations and identify where they may be able to make concessions for the environment. Following this a company should put in place a management system which is charged with getting the changes made and monitoring their effectiveness.

When it comes to identifying, implementing and monitoring the environmental impact that business makes, there are two choices for a company. The first is that they can develop a department within their company to look after this process internally and the second is that they can contract the job out to an organization that is equipped to do such studies and implementation projects. Which option a company chooses depends largely on the size of the business and its capability to support a new department within its budget.

Most companies are now anxious to ensure that their manufacturing process is as low impact as possible. This is not only because of the government legislation that they now have to follow stringently, but also due to large social pressure on them from shareholders and consumers in order to show that they are a socially responsible company. There is clearly still a long way to go as carbon emissions around the world and pollution cause ongoing environmental problems, however there is progress in the change of attitudes that most big business now holds in regard to their responsibility towards the environment.

Enviroment management is one of the most important changes that has occurred in big business in the last 20 years, but it has also had an impact on the daily lives of regular Joe's and small business too. There is a shift towards people accepting the realities of environmental disaster if great changes are not made immediately to shift the balance between 21st century living and the needs of the environment to sustain life on earth.

Enviroment management is the theory behind how to better balance the needs of humans living in the 21st century and the needs of the environment to sustain itself. There are three major elements to this theory: politics, programs and resources. From big business to the individual home owner, almost every aspect of life has been touched in recent years by changes affected through environmental management to rectify the balance and reduce environmental damage.
