UK airport parking in October, November and December - trends, opportunities and advice

By: Lynn Rosario

The UK airport parking price comparison website 1stairportparking.co.uk has posted their October 2010 pricing update, with details of the lowest prices for a range of stays at all of the major UK airports. In researching and posting the update, they have identified a number of trends and opportunities for passengers flying in October, November and December, and have offered tips and advice below:
1. Prices increased for October - book now
Anyone booking airport parking in October for an October stay - perhaps for a half term school holiday or a late summer break - might notice that at most airports the price of parking is higher than it was for stays September. It would appear that the cheaper car parks are busy - or even full - this month. Book as soon as you can, as prices are likely to continue to rise.
2. Prices then drop significantly in November and early December
The quietest months for UK airport parking are November and December. Too late for summer holidays, but too early for winter sun and sports fans, this is the 'kipper season'. Look at any of the tables on 1stairportparking.co.uk and you will see prices drop significantly for November and December. A week's airport parking at Stansted drops from £55.60 in October to £36.50 in November, a fall of 35%.
3. The best time to book is more than 30 days but less than 60 days before you fly
The car parks and parking companies have learnt from budget airlines, and increase their prices for stays closer to today's date. Those booking last minute are less price sensitive, and the cheapest spaces are often full. Just as you should not drive up to a car park and pay the gate price, nor should you leave booking your car park to the last minute. The best time to book is more than 30 days before you fly, but less than 60 days for all but 2 weeks of the year.
4. Book early for Christmas and New Year
We used the term 'usually' above. For late December (Christmas and New Year) we expect prices to increase next month and again in December. If you are away at this time, lock in the best price by booking now.
5. The best airport parking deals for 2 - 3 days, a week and longer over the next three months?
(a) For those booking for a 2 - 3 day stay - perhaps for a Christmas shopping trip or a visit to a Christmas market - the difference between off and on airport parking is small in October, November and December. Treat yourself and book on airport parking, which is typically much closer to the terminal.
However at Heathrow - a favourite for those going to New York for their Christmas shopping - the short stay car park is eye-wateringly expensive and the long stay car park is actually further away from the QPark Heathrow 'off airport' car park - you drive past it to get to the official airport long stay ! Either book at QPark, or book Meet & Greet for a treat !
(b) Those booking for a week should look carefully at the price of on and off airport parking. At Gatwick it is not a very big difference over the next 3 months (but some would say Gatwick's 'on airport car parks' are so far from the terminals, they are really off airport), but at regional airports it significant. You can save £20 for an extra 10 - 15 minutes on your journey.
(c) Those booking for longer than a week should compare the cost of airport parking with booking an airport hotel that offers up to 15 days free parking with an overnight stay, especially if they have an early outward flight or late return. During November and early December there are some great deals most airports - and especially Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Manchester. Find the lowest cost of parking at 1stairportparking.co.uk, then compare this to the cost of a hotel with free parking at Airport-Hotels-Guide.co.uk, an airport hotels price comparison website.
We will post another UK airport parking trends, opportunities and advice report at the end of October, after the next www.1stairportparking.co.uk pricing update.
