Types of Paneling and Decorating the Panels

By: David Urmann

Paneling your home gives your abode a new and refreshing look. At the same time it can be turned to a fun activity that makes the task less tedious. The basic idea of paneling is putting together several small pieces of whatever material you want to use for a more appealing effect, rather than just slapping one big piece.

For brick paneling, several bricks are put on top of one another, arranged symmetrically to create a warm and cozy ambiance. Wood paneling deals with several pieces of thin slats of wood put together. In stone paneling, stones are used. The irregularly shaped stones will give a more natural effect but will require more patience to arrange together in a single panel.

Knotty pine paneling is not so common but it is one of the most effective ways of paneling in producing a rustic, western and natural effect. This is also quite expensive but you will save on cost if you install the knotty pines yourself. Afterwards, some varnishing or coating can be applied to prolong the life of the knotty pines and to give it a smoother and shinier finish also.

There are many types of paneling used in different houses. You can do more than just install paneling to beautify your place. Here are some interesting ideas.

First, you can paint your paneling. Many people think it is not a good idea. But actually it is just a matter of personal taste. Many paneling are just a wood grain picture glued on plywood, and you can paint on them to further make it appealing.

Before painting, make sure your paneling is thoroughly cleaned from dust and oils, and dried well. Brush it first with a primer. Put tape linings on your windows, and trim on the areas that you do not want to paint. Fill the grooves with compound and spackles if you do not want them. After that, dry and sand the wood to smoothen the surface. You can now begin painting.

Let the paint stand to dry well before removing the tapes. Wipe the paint the over flowed paint. Restore your original setup and enjoy your new paintings.

Aside from painting, you can also try tongue and groove paneling. To do this, nail one piece at the bottom. The nail must be into the stud of the wall to the groove, and do not nail into the panel. Slide in the next panel and repeat the steps.

Another way to decorate your paneling is to put wall papers. This is an easy way to decorate your walls because wall papers come in thousands of beautiful designs. You need not worry about abstracting your own design anymore. Just choose the perfect wall paper to match your interiors.

Before putting these wall papers, make sure you clean the wall very well from dirt, dust and oil. Use spackling or drywall compound if you do not want grooves. Let them dry well and sand smoothly. Apply a latex primer to make the paint adhere better. Then clean with TSP to apply paper right over paneling.

Wood panels need not be very boring. You can always find ways to decorate it to make it look better and fit your personality. After all, your home also defines who you are.
