In Part 2, we talked about how to begin the marketing process so that your website has traffic - also known as visitors. In this final section, we will talk about what you can do to make yourself more visible on the internet so that Google and other search engines will not only see your site but will index it to a higher and higher position. This in turn will lead to more and more visitors as your website progresses to a page one search result. Search engines like Google continually prowl the internet with automated software robots called "bots" looking for information about websites and their content. Later if someone searches, for example, the words "hot cars", the search engine will lists the many sites it found with the words "hot cars" and place them on the search results page. Unfortunately, if it was your website about "hot cars" the results of this word search may place your website on page 192, or maybe even page 1,192,000. How many people do you think will look down 192 page results to see what you have to offer on your website? What you have to do is somehow, and we'll get to that in a moment, tell the search engines that your website with "hot cars" is very important and deserves to be on page number one or two so everyone will see it, buy from you, and make you very rich. For search engines to initially find their way to your site you should register your website to the various search engines that do the crawling (searches). There are dozens of search engines out there; Google, Yahoo, Bing, Exact Seek just to name a few. Although most search engines will eventually find your website, it doesn't hurt to go to their respective sites and provide them with your website's information- sort of like introduce yourself to them- the new kid on the block. There are also many submission service sites that list a multitude of search engines. These sites allow you to enter your information manually so you can register with the search engines for free. I would personally stay away from companies that submit to search engine sites for a fee. There is no need to pay someone; it only takes a few minutes. Basically, once you have registered with the main engines, the smaller ones will find you. So don't waste your money do it yourself. One of things that you should do early in the process of developing your site is to add keywords to it. These are words which people can't view when they visit your site but search engines can see - these special words tell the search engine what your site is about so take the time to do it right and pick your words carefully. Using as an example, the "hot cars" website above, we could add words like; fast cars, flashy cars, sporty cars, exotic cars, etc. There are internet sites that will help you find keywords (Google Adwords) by just typing in a key word or phrase and the program will search for words that are popular on the internet. Adding keywords to your site is done through either the CPanel or Administration panel. The exact process of doing this is beyond the scope of this article. Backlinking can help raise your website ranking tremendously. A backlink is when another website lists your website URL (uniform resource locator, i.e., your web address) on their site through a banner, text ad, clickable image, clickable URL, etc. The easiest way of getting backlinks is through internet directories which are like the old fashion telephone directories (yellow pages). They carry a listing of various websites in all types of categories with a brief description of each. A simple search on the internet will yield hundreds of available directories that you can submit to. Some directories charge a fee which can range from a $1.00 on up to hundreds of dollars to be listed on their site. Some are free; some are free only if you place a reciprocal referencing their website on your site. The reciprocal backlink option requires that if the other website places some sort of reference to your website on their website, you will reciprocate by placing a reference to their website on your website. Non- reciprocal backlinks are the way to go because it behooves you to have dozens, if not hundreds of backlinks. You can see that reciprocal backlinks can make a mess of your own website by the clutter of these references to other sites on your page. Besides, search engines can often determine if your backlink is in exchange for the same privilege by the other party and will often discount the value of the link through this sort of arrangement. But if a search engines sees your website listed with non-reciprocal listings, it gives your website better credibility because yours was listed without having to do the same - it's there on its own merit. Also, as there are fee based search engine submitters, there are fee based directory submitters. Use caution in using these services. Another way of getting backlinks is through Ezine article writing (short for electronic magazine) which has become one of the most efficient ways of getting your website known on the internet. Can't write - or don't want to write? Don't worry, for as little as $10 you can have an article written for you on almost any subject. Why would writing an article help your website get known? At the bottom of an internet article you will find what is called a resource box. And guess what? The resource box has your name (pen name if you want to remain anonymous) and your website URL. Look at the bottom of this article and you can see my resource box. When you submit your article to the hundreds of newsletters, blogs, or article directories on the web and it becomes published, your website URL will be seen by hundreds, perhaps thousands of people reading your article. And once published, not only do your readers see your website's address, but it's out there for search engines to pick up. You now have a many many backlinks. Article writing is a key way of getting your page ranking higher because now you are becoming more important - you're an author. Contributing to forums, social networks, writing blogs, maybe even a newsletter will help get your website known. Just make sure your signature includes not only your name but your website as well. A simple signature is all that is needed not paragraph after paragraph about your site. People will get irritated if you push your website too much. For example, contribute to a forum and sign off with Sally or Tom or whatever at http://www.xxxxx.com. Speaking of which, Microsoft Outlook has a signatures option (Tools -Options-Mail Format-Signatures) which allows you to make a signature that attaches to each piece of email you send out. It's neat - try it. Finally, we have Google ads, pay-per-click, and joining affiliate programs, all of which can be used to help promote your site. Albeit, these forms of "getting the word out" can be very costly and I would suggest waiting a long period of time before putting money into your site without first having tested the waters of what works and what doesn't. Stay away from buying pop-up ads, or pop-under ads - they are annoying and will make people just want to stay away from your site. Spam emails - need I say more. Nothing is more aggravating than SPAM and it's illegal so don't even go there. Building a website takes time, effort, and patience. Unless you have a niche market website - some product no one else in the world has but everyone wants - you will not make millions overnight. Even then it will take time to market and get the word out. So plan on a long haul but realize it can and will be worth it. Once the word is out, once you get noticed seriously by the search engines, traffic will come to your site and you will slowly sell products. Most of all enjoy yourself - owning a website or two can be fun.
