Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial, which is on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., stands as a commemoration of the life and deeds of the legendary sixteenth president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln. The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, with perhaps the most recent example being Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech in 1963. U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC The U.S. Capitol building houses the United States Congress at the top of Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall. It is not quite in the centre of DC, but the Capitol building is the focus by which the quadrants of the district are divided. Although the original architect of the building was William Thornton, the design was modified by a succession of architects including Stephen Hallet, Thomas U. Walter, Benjamin Latrobe, Charles Bulfinch and August Schoenborn and was completed under the watchful eye of Edward Clark. The White House, Washington DC This world-renowned building was first inhabited in 1800 by President John Adams, with President Jefferson taking his place a year later. Jefferson extended the building with the help of architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The White House is renaissance revival in style and is said to have been built after an Irish country mansion. The Washington Monument A giant, white obelisk situated in the western part of Washington DC’s National Mall, the Washington Monument was constructed as a memorial to former President George Washington. The construction began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after he had died. The construction was on hold for a number of years because of a lack of funds and the intervention of the American Civil War. The final stone was laid in 1885, and the monument was opened to the public in 1888. Upon completion, it briefly became the world's tallest structure. However the completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889 soon saw it lose that honour.
