this adds up to dreams of warm weather and some time off from your classes. Not to fear – spring break is just around the corner. But, where should you go? We have assembled information about some of the best spring break destinations in continental United States, specifically destinations found in Florida and Texas. Florida Keys The Florida Keys are the perfect place for underwater fun. Avid snorkelers and divers must check out the Florida Keys Reef Track, the only living coral barrier in North America and the third largest in the world. For those who want to relax on a beach, head to Bahia Honda State Park, which has been named one of the top ten beaches in the world. Everyone is sure to find something to enjoy on the 1,700 island archipelago. Fort Lauderdale The beachside community of Fort Lauderdale is not the same spring break hot spot it used to be. If you are looking for a warm beach away from the traditional rowdy spring breakers, Fort Lauderdale is the place for you. Known as the “Venice of America”, Fort Lauderdale is home to the International Swimming Hall of Fame, has some of the best waters for yachting and features about 300 miles of canals, channels and rivers. Miami With temperatures hovering in the 80’s during March, Miami is a great place to forget about three months of snow drifts. You will find everything from retirees and immigrants to celebrities and vacationers in this diverse city. If you are looking for a popular place to soak up the sun, head to South Beach –which has been dubbed one of the hottest vacation spots in the U.S. If that’s not your style, not to worry, Dade County has more than 35 miles of beautiful beaches. Orlando This city has more to offer than just Mickey Mouse and kiddy coaster. Orlando is also known as “The City Beautiful” for its more than 300 lakes, rivers, wildlife preserves, parks and public spaces. The nightlife options are as varied as you can imagine – from Downtown Disney and Universal Studio’s Citywalk to downtown Orlando’s Orange Avenue and Universal Studio’s Latin Quarter. Tampa Downtown Tampa has a wide variety of museums, businesses, fine dining and clubs – all with a Latin twist. After a long day of lounging on the beach, put your dancing shoes on – getting groovy is a vital part of your Tampa experience! The nightclubs are lively and many are internationally themed. While you are there, make sure to have a Cubano as it is rumored the sandwich was created in this city. Austin If you are looking for a good party, this college town will be happy to oblige. Austin, the capital of Texas, is also known as the “Live Music Capital of the World”. If you are visiting in March, check out the Zilker Park Kite Fest, the Austin Chocolate Fest or the South by Southwest Film and Music Festivals. Corpus Christi This town features miles of shoreline perfectly primed for sunbathing. A few miles northwest of South Padre Island, Corpus Christi has all the nightlife of any spring break destination, while offering boat rentals, shopping and a promenade for biking or skating. Visit the town in April and see the popular sand castle competition, SandFest. Galveston Galveston has welcomed so many immigrants, it’s known as “Little Ellis Island”. No matter where you are coming from, you will feel at home at this city’s 32 miles of beach. You’ll be able to find family friendly and isolated spots as well as beaches that play host to day-long parties. South Padre Island This has been a spring break hot spot since the middle of the 1970’s. The temperatures rarely rise above 85 degrees in the summer or drop below 65 degrees in the winter. You will find food of every kind here – ranging from Polynesian and Mediterranean to Italian and – of course – Tex Mex. The 3,000 legal residents of South Padre Island are more than happy to welcome winter-weary college students to beautiful beaches and notable nightlife. Texas Gulf Coast The Texas Gulf Coast stretches from the Louisiana border to Brownsville and on to the Rio Grande. It has great beaches and several oil rich cities along the way. The coast is divided into four main sections – Bayous (a marshy area from Galveston Bay east to Louisiana), North Barrier Coast (from Point Comfort in the south to Galveston Bay east of Bay City), South Barrier Coast (from Baffin Bay in the south near Kingville past Corpus Christi to Port Lavaca) and the Rio Grande Valley (from the Mexican border at Brownsville up to Baffin Bay). Wherever you choose to vacation this year, have fun and stay safe!
