It is impossible to deny it: the moment you have set your eyes on them, you just couldn’t evade the feeling that you have instantly fallen in love. This is what a sheltie will do to most of the people who have a few minutes to spare and happen to place their eyes on a cute puppy from the breed of the Shetland Sheepdogs. In point of fact, it would have been hardly possible to avoid them; there’s no such thing as an unnoticeable sheltie, because shelties are built to be noticed. Truth be said, there’s nothing that could obscure shelties; in any environment, shelties will most likely immediately let you know they are there too. If you ever hear someone say something like “where there is a sheltie, there is a bark”, you can entirely trust them. Moreover, you could bring your own commentary or draw your own conclusion on the fact that “where there is a sheltie, there is a… constant bark”. In fact, this is the first aspect which will catch your… ears when it comes to this particular dog breed. However, no need to worry about the fact that they may be generating something similar to an everlasting atmosphere of annoyance; on the contrary, far from it. Time – not too long though – and your patience – it will not be overworked either – will train shelties into more obedient companions, so that you will also have moments of respite. On the other hand, don’t expect a sheltie to just sit calm with his head resting quietly on his paws; they will do that only when they sleep. Otherwise, they make one of the most agile, energetic, and restless dog breeds. Actually, it’s their liveliness and quick-wittedness we love them for. Of course, their lovable presence, their frolicsome, almond-contoured eyes and their genuinely exuberant fur are the other characteristics one could never neglect. Going back to trainability, the marvelous thing about shelties, as it has already been suggested, is that they will turn, in a relatively short while, into exceptionally faithful companions. Moreover, their alertness and vitality, their constant responsiveness and swift sharpness advertise for their suitability for a “job” like that of a watchdog. Don’t be misled by the small size of the shelties, it is an insignificant aspect when it comes to compare it to the dog’s agility and swiftness; those 35-37 centimeters (the height that a mature sheltie is generally expected to reach) of permanently moving fur will be the most trustful alert system you could ever have around; it’s not in vain that they are also incredible herders – at least at origins. As a plus, their eyesight is worthy of envy; it is a natural gift which makes them able to spot various objects in motion even as far as 300 meters away. Also, if you are one of the fans of dog competitions, you may be sure that shelties will rank among the top dog competitors. Due to the fact that they simply adore variations in the activities you do together, but also on account of some preparatory competition training, shelties will excel in contests of flyball, agility, search and rescue, tracking, herding (of course), and, finally, in obedience circumstances. That’s one impressive array of abilities; I think we all agree on that. In the end, all the things we love most about shelties are nothing but the result of their liveliness. Of course, we do enjoy their appearance, but even so they are not just some fluffy pets that do nothing else apart from being… fluffy. In the case where you were searching exclusively for fluffiness, then it is most likely that a toy dressed in a fur-like plush would have suited you better. However, in case you are searching for a real dog – an exquisite combination of fluff, animation, playfulness and devotion – then it is highly probable that a sheltie could make the best possible choice.
