The story of this artist and how he came to be

By: Timothy Albrecht

For this artist, art and music were always synonymous. He grew up in Fredrick in a house that was filled with song and art. In school de discovered how not all the kids was able to sing and draw. He had worked in music most of his life, because he decided to focus on it when he was younger. In his younger years he played with local bands and earned money which was better than being at the car wash.

After 30 years music was still his life. Remembering his talent with painting he decided to try it again 12 years ago. Now he still continues to paint. Like in his younger years, he is both a musician and a painter. Recently his paintings have been identified to have more ideas behind them.

His musician friend who was also a painter gave him a few lessons on oil painting. He worked on his realistic style while studying under his mentor. The results of the lessons was that he was able to make a painting that was chosen as a promotional print the year it was painted, and a portrait of a long haired, white cat.

It is important to keep the message of your work clear. Essentially what he looks for in a certain scene is the emotional impact of it. He targets the most flattering image when making portraits for people. Essentially you want the right lighting when it comes to flattery.

If you want to have a three dimensional image then make sure you have the proper lighting and shadow depth. He uses watercolor for his pieces yet there are some who think it is oil he uses. He likes the convenience, and watercolor is a little less technical.

Hired to make a mural for a couple who live in the Clover Hill section of Frederick was one of his biggest projects. It was an image of colonial Williamsburg that he had to paint in one whole wall of their home. Symbolizing their love for the early American village is this mural that covers one wall in their house. 10 feet wide by 4 feet tall is how wide the mural is which is of a fictional street.

Wanting to make the mural more authentic he added some drawings of wagons and people dressed in colonial garb and hollyhocks. He would work about six to 12 hours a day four days a week each time while on the project. His rehearsals would be done in the other three remaining days. One cannot escape the physical and mental drain that comes with painting. One will need to muster a lot of concentration for this.
