The most exciting new cruise ships.

By: Dave Terry

Picture an ocean cruise and you’d be forgiven for imagining a luxury liner packed with silver-haired holiday goers. But there’s more to your average cruise liner than deck chairs and ocean views, and these ships in particular are far from average. Take a look at our guide to what’s hot in the world of modern cruising!

NCL's Norwegian Gem

The Norwegian Gem, unveiled in Dover in October 2007, is the liner for those who want to do what they like, when they like, wearing whatever they want. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to onboard activities – from a state of the art cinema, 12 separate dining establishments, a variety of stylish bars, and the ship’s own ten-pin bowling alley! For those who like a relaxed vibe, the Gem is perfect – you’re free to eat when you like, as there are no set times for dining – and you’re free to wear what you like, as there is no dress code whatsoever.

Carnival Cruise Lines' Carnival Splendor

Carnival Cruise Lines specialise in bringing you the most luxurious cruise liners on the market. The Carnival Splendor is their newest arrival, with the ability to cater for almost 3000 holidaymakers. Launched by HearSay singer-turned-TV celebrity Myleene Klass in early 2008, this colourful vessel sports a massive Asian-themed spa and fantastic entertainment facilities for children.

Costa Cruises' Costa Serena

Since 2007, the Costa Serena has been offering the best in relaxing sea cruises. For the dads there’s the spectacular and state of the art Formula 1 race driving simulator, while the mums can enjoy the latest in spa activities.

Princess Cruises' Emerald Princess

The latest addition to the 16-strong fleet of Princess liners currently drifting round the world is the Emerald. The 113,000-ton, 3,100-passenger Emerald Princess upholds the same high standards of fine dining, great service, and great features as it’s similarly bulky yet beautiful sisters. And the activities on this liner are truly unique. As well as its very own trattoria, the Emerald also features a 3-tier piazza, circus performances, and daily comedy shows.

Holland America's Eurodam

The Holland America brand are known for their smaller scale liners, creating a more cosy atmosphere. Their latest cruise ship, the Eurodam, is now their biggest, at a princely 86,000 tonnes. This ship is the most romantic of our selection. Imagine waking up every morning to a panoramic view of the ocean! Well now you can thanks to this thoughtfully designed ship’s enormous wrap-around windows.
