The Selous Game Reserve

By: Gen Wright

Most of the game reserves in the world can be found in Africa. These game reserves are usually open to the public for tourists to see and for safaris to take place. This is practically why the word "safari" is associated with Africa because most of the land area of Africa is dedicated to game reserves.

More than just a land area set aside for wildlife and tourism; a game reserve is the natural habitat of many species, and is where ecosystems are protected and conserved. Moreover, these reserves do not only host one ecosystem, but some of these host a number of ecosystems including savannah, fynbos, forest, acacia, woodland, and valley bushveld. Each of these ecosystems is properly protected and conserved in most game reserves found in Africa.

One of the largest among these reserves is located in the south of Tanzania, which also houses the largest fauna reserve in the world. The Selous Game Reserve is not only a vast collection of various fauna species, but is also covered with uniquely green grasses and tangles of vegetation. Moreover, tall Borassus Palms grow along the river banks which leave a headless totem along the river routes. This reserve is a fusion of colorful landscape where the white leadwood trunks contrast the surrounding lush of green and cascading array of sandy teracottas.

Since the Selous Game Reserve is apportioned primarily to the conservation of wildlife, no permanent human habitation or permanent structures are permitted into the area. The Tanzanian Game Department controls human entry and exit in order to ensure that the environment of the reserve is maintained favorable to the ecosystems that it supports.

The Selous Game Reserve covers more than 50, 000 square kilometers of land. Its diversity of game and scenery makes this reserve naturally appealing to photographers. Furthermore, this reserve is one of the few reserves in Africa that allows safari by foot. This set-up provides the tourists an opportunity to experience the wild close hand. Moreover, the conservation area allows boating safaris as well. Since the reserve is blessed with the presence of the Rufiji River which serves as the lifeblood of the park, safaris can be easily set-up by boat along the Rufiji River. A number of amazing wildlife can be experienced in a boating safari since the Rufiji showcases grazing antelopes, crocodiles, and hippos.

Aside from the spectacular landscape, tourists can experience Africa's Big Five at the Selous Game Reserve. In fact, the reserve is known to be the home of the greatest population of elephants. This is practically one of the few places on earth where you can see so many different species grazing freely in an area larger than some countries in the world. In addition to the Big Five, a wide variety of known bird species that are both resident and migratory freely perch along the banks of the Rufiji and the vast conservation area of the reserve. Indeed, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the most pristine and unspoiled natural habitat in the world.
