Traffic signals have become a priceless tool for ensuring traffic flow throughout the city. Some of the signals are made in conjunction to work with other traffic signals to allow uninterrupted flow from one signal to another. Some are timed so that if you are driving at the required speed limit, you will receive a green signal at each intersection as you move down the street. Other signals are on preset timers where the red, green and yellow indications will move around for a specified time period. A red signal indication means that the traffic in front of the indicator shall stop until the indication turns green. Although, right turns are allowed at most intersections after the driver has stopped, the driver must be careful of pedestrians and vehicles along his or her way. The locations with NO TURN ON RED signs are put up for safety reasons and the driver respect it by not turning until a green indication for the direction of flow is, shown. Yellow signals caution drivers that the signal will change to a red indication briefly. If you have not already entered the intersection and can safely halt prior to entering it, stop and wait for the next signal indication. If you are already present in the intersection, proceed through the intersection. Green signals mean that the driver has the freedom and the right of way at the intersection to proceed provided there are no other hindrances i.e. other vehicles ahead of your vehicle, pedestrians, ambulances, etc if other vehicles are still present in the intersection when the light turns green, the driver must give way to the vehicles and pedestrians. He must ensure that all traffic in the opposite directions has stopped before moving ahead. If wanting to make a left turn, the driver can only make it if there is enough time and space to complete the turn before the approaching traffic becomes a risk When speaking about traffic signal equipment, it basically consists of the following main components: • Traffic Signal Controller • Signal Heads • Vehicle Detectors Unfortunately, there are drivers who tend to go beyond the limit on “making” the traffic signal by running red lights and thereby posing a risk to others that may be entering the intersection. It is not always possible for police officers to be at the intersection when a driver runs across a red light; the traffic control in many cities has installed cameras at various intersections. These cameras take out pictures of vehicle license plates and drivers who do not stop at the red light. These pictures will then be, used to issue tickets to the registered owner/ driver of the vehicle. This red light photo enforcement program has been effective in many cities by reducing the number of drivers willing to take a chance going through the intersection after the light has turned red for their direction of traffic. This program has helped to maintain smooth flow of traffic in many major cities.
