The Proper Care And Feeding Of Your Bathroom Shower

By: Ken Landis

What is the most important room in your home? I think that it's the bathroom - and the shower area in particular. What would life be like if we couldn't take a good, hot, soapy shower after a hard day's work? Life would be far less enjoyable, for sure!

Do you practice good shower room hygiene? Well, you need to. Think about it: shower areas are both very humid and very wet - and that makes it the perfect breeding ground for many unhealthy things, including mold, mildew and germs. It is always a good practice to use a reliable disinfectant as well as a mildew and mold killer.

Next: Soap scum. What exactly is it? Well, soap scum is produced, believe it or not, when hard water reacts with ingredients in typical soaps. Most soaps contain substances that react with lime - and high concentrations of lime are present in hard water. In addition, hard water can cause calcium and magnesium to build up on your shower drain, shower head and shower walls.

What all this means is that if you have hard water and use traditional soap formulations, you will have to take time to clean off soap scum build-up. It is best (and easiest) to clean this off on a daily basis - after everyone has used the shower for the day. An interesting fact: if you use shower gels, you will not have the formation of soap scum on your bathroom shower walls and fixtures.

Do you need to fix up your shower area? Well, you'll find that you have lots and lots of choices: You can go for the traditional approach - the typical bathtub under the shower set-up. Or you can install a free-standing shower unit. If you are really adventurous you can choose to have an all-glass enclosure installed - very beautiful (and expensive).

If you need a shower enclosure outside, you can also purchase these specially-designed units as well. These are perfect for showering off after swimming at the beach or poolside. Many outdoor-types use them for cleaning up after a messy day out in the fields

In your shower room you can use traditional (and ever-popular) shower curtains - available in many designs and styles, or you can install doors that open out, or doors that slide along on rails (usually attached to the floor or tub edge). You can also tile up or seal your entire shower room and have a floor-level shower installed.

Let me remind you of one thing in closing: many a layman has attempted to install their own shower enclosure, and soon found themselves in the middle of a hopeless mess! If you don't have the know-how, save yourself some time, aggravation, and money - pick up the telephone, and call a good plumber or home remodeling firm and let them do this for you.
