This article is the first in a series of articles based on some amount of online research I recently did potential alternative energy solutions. These articles can be found at my Water 4 Gas Blog Believe it or not, Fred Flintstone was dead on with his foot powered automobile!!! Yep, that is where my research led me! His only error is that as an a cartoon creation he was he wasn’t allowed to “think” big enough! Folks are coming to discover that a potentially huge natural resource for electrical energy is the energy generated from the routine activities that people do and it can be done without slave labor camps! Just by doing what we are already doing but by being a tiny bit smarter about these activitieswith regards to capturing and recycling of energy we can light large cities! So it certainly seems that ol’ Fred was smarter than he looked! Well, it is one destination where my research led me. I have written other pieces. My focused goal is to make folks aware of the wealth of alternative energy information at my Water 4 Gas that shows people how to convert your fossil fuel powered automobile engine into partial combination or total water-based hydrogen consuming system. But in that process I have discovered the genius of alternative energy that I wanted to help get the word out about some of the amazing discoveries I have come across with you too. There is a gym in Hong Kong where a young woman named Wong was doing her workout that is hoping that a vehicle battery, some exercize machines and a crowd of health conscious exercisers can help solve the world's energy problems. See, as Ms Wong in Hong Kong was going through her circuit training and as she increased her own body’s energy output to electronica music blasting on the gym's sound system, the energy she was emanating was captured and converted into electricity and retained in a battery that powers some of the gym's lights. "It's very good motivation," she said, pointing at the lighting fixture above her head. "You can watch yourself burning calorieswhich power that light." This win-win scenario is just one of a wave of projects on the fringes of the renewable-energy movement that are trying, on many fronts, to harness the energy of human activity. Some approaches include a dance floor that captures and regenerates electrical energy from the vibrations of the dancers on the dance floor to energy-harvesting shoes that convert motion from simply walking into electricity. One shoe prototype can generate about six watts, more than enough to power a cellphone. Besides Fred Flintstone, another icon of the 1960s was the shoe phone used by Maxwell Smart on the Get Smart program. This is a new angle on a shoe phone! Like many of these projects, the health club idea isn't going to light up a skyline or even provide sufficient electricity for the club's own air conditioning. So far they have only connected 13 machines at one of its facilities. If all of them were connected up, the energy generated would tally up to roughly 300 watts, roughly enough to run three 27-inch TV sets, 5 sixty-watt light bulbs or several hundred video iPods. If the gym had all the machines in use 10 hours a day for 365 days, the gym could generate roughly $183 worth of electrical energy. At that rate of progress, it would take about 82 years to recoup the original $15,000 investment. Recapturing human activity into a power source has a long, odd history (no, not talking about Fred again lol). The first phones, two centuries ago, had hand cranks that produced an electrical impulse to notify the operator when one was trying to place a. Flashlights that operate by hand crank have been available for a long time. So have hand-crank portable radios. But unlike these predecessors, quite a few of the new approaches stress retaining energy that is a byproduct of casual human life, such as exercising, dancing and walking. Scientists give the name such devices "parasitic" generators. Many of the most futuristic projects focus on recapturing the energy of crowds. It’s as if someone was watching the Mardi Gras or Times Square on New Year’s Eve or a U2 concert and said…”man! If we could somehow… harness that energy!” Going back to the health spa scenario again, those exercise systems already contained small motion-powered generators which were used to light up their display screens. But the systems were producing significantly more electricity than was required to power the screen, and the excess energy was being wasted as heat. The generators in 13 machines got rewired on the health club’s main floor to retain the excess energy, a car battery that could retain the power. The battery was rigged into an inverter taken from a mobile home. It transferred the voltage from DC to AC and was plugged into 13 fluorescent lights hanging above the exercise machines. The company's U.S. parent is monitoring the Hong Kong experiment closely and they say that they would consider a global rollout if the Hong Kong project meets or exceeds expectations. The company has 3,000,000 members and almost 400 locations in the united States POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
