The internet made easy finding long lost friends and acquaintances.

Human beings naturally have a need to socialize and interact with other human beings. Friends are valued. But people evolve and move on, and friends cannot always be together. Social networking websites bring friends from miles away closer again. It also makes possible searching for long lost friends. The development and innovation of technology plus the ideas and efforts of key people behind computers and internet, led to the extensive growth of these websites.

There are several ways of searching friends in the internet. First one can use free people search services. You just enter the email addresses, names, the location or address of people you wish to find. The service is free.

Net People Search services and yahoo people search are two examples of this type. Other search engines also include background checks, SS number and phone information. As with the use of reverse phone lookups, the number is required and will provide the appropriate name for the owner of the number keyed in. This is an added service of several phone service companies like AT&T.

Another possible way for locating friends is thru the use of email addresses directory. It can be a choice between the free service and the paid one. Name, addresses and relevant information are provided for the searcher.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, Gmail and AOL provide people search engines. However the use of email addresses created issues on its reliability. The reason behind is the reality that it is already easy for one particular person to create as many email addresses as he wishes. Creating multiple email addresses is relatively easy.

There are issues of security and privacy arising from people search services. A user should make sure that the search service is reliable, secured and reputable. It should be able to provide the assurance of keeping all information/ data confidential.

Another way of crossing path with old friends and gaining new ones is through social networking websites. Popular sites include Friendster, My space, Multiply, Facebook, and Hi5. User can key in the name (first and last name) or the email address of the person being searched. These groups keep a collection of user or member profiles in one central database. Additional service or action include: sending private messages to the person, forwarding a profile to another member or sending friendly emoticons. Users can create friends united by common interests, career or even status. Network is generated by creating group links.

These sites are open to all users and are created to be user-friendly. It is important for parents or guardians to watch over their young kids who access such sites in the internet. Kids must be able to determine and understand the privacy of some personal information. Children could be divulging private information to strangers. Guide them appropriately.

Other reasons why social networking sites boomed is the ability to unite people with common interests in the middle of a diversified world. Plus the fact that it is also a free service. Members are allowed to write blogs of their topic choice or market their products. It also served as a background checking kit for employers on their job applicants.
