The Drug Rehab Reality

By: Adam Covey

No one wants to be admitted to drug rehab. Unfortunately, it is just somewhere one finds himself, usually after a long, exhausting, downward spiral of disaster. In fact, most who "check-in" to drug rehab do not do so willingly, but rather as a last ditch attempt at salvaging whatever life their personal 'drug of choice' has not already destroyed. Even more common, is the addict who commits to treatment not for himself AT ALL! Common motivators are spouses, judges, and jobs, as addicts rarely have the self worth or self love to even want to heal their own wounds. Unlike other illnesses, addiction has a cunning way of having the patient believe their pain is deserved and warranted; thus leaving the addict feeling unworthy of treatment and eventual happiness. However, counselors and fellow recovering addicts are prepared for this, and the as the slogan goes, "Whatever got you here is alright. And we will love you until you love yourself!" And to someone who has spent the last however long, unable to feel any emotion at all, this is foreign! But that is OK, who said drug rehab was cozy and comfortable all the time? Speaking on discomfort, once an addict has entered treatment, it is not unusual for him to want to run.
The new way of doing things, and feeling feelings is scary, and addicts do not like scary. Shooting up herion with a stranger in a dark alley is NOT scary, but sharing feelings and vulnerability in a circle sure is frightening! It is incredible to hear a group of recovering addicts describe the horrors and life-threatening situations they have endured, but in the next breath literally cry because tomorrow is visiting day and that is SCARY! Much to the dismay of many, drug rehab is not a vacation. It is work, hard and spiritual work. It is 'brain washing' in the best sense of the term; after all, many who find themselves at rehab need their brain washed! All treatment centers are not created equal, and if you are lucky enough to find yourself at a Betty Ford or Caron Foundation, consider yourself blessed. It is a sad reality that for each addict who has been given the opportunity for recovery, there is one who was not.
